وَلَمand did not أَرَI see قَوماًa people مِثلَlike قَومٍa people رَأَيتَهُمI saw them
وَلَم أَرَ قَوماً مِثلَ قَومٍ رَأَيتَهُم
عَلىat وَلَجاتِhollows البَرِّthe land أَحمىstauncher in defense وَأَنجَباand nobler
عَلى وَلَجاتِ البَرِّ أَحمى وَأَنجَبا
And I have never seen a people like those I saw,
I have not seen a people like the people I saw
In the land’s hollows, stauncher in defense and nobler.
On the summits of the land, more ardent and honorable
وَاِقتُلand slay المرَّواسَthe battle-hardened warrior فيin كُلِّevery مَجمَعٍgathering
وَاِقتُل المرَّواسَ في كُلِّ مَجمَعٍ
إِذاwhen ضَعضَعَshook الدَهرُtime الجُموعَthe hosts وَكَبكَباand tumbled them down
إِذا ضَعضَعَ الدَهرُ الجُموعَ وَكَبكَبا
And slay the battle-hardened warrior in every gathering,
Kill the wavering one in every assembly
When time shakes the hosts and tumbles them down.
When time shakes the crowds and muddles them
فَنَحنُso we حَبَسناwe held back بِالزِمازِمِwith massed troops بَعدَماafter
فَنَحنُ حَبَسنا بِالزِمازِمِ بَعدَما
أَقامواthey established لَناfor us فيin عَرصَةِthe courtyard الدارِof the dwelling تُرتَباa fixed position
أَقاموا لَنا في عَرصَةِ الدارِ تُرتَبا
For we held them back with massed troops, after
So we are imprisoned at Zimazim after

They prepared for us in the courtyard of the house an order
قَتَلناهُمwe slew them ماwhat lies بَينَbetween قَلعٍa rocky height مُطلَقٍopen
قَتَلناهُم ما بَينَ قَلعٍ مُطلَقٍ
إِلىto القَيعَةِthe plain الغَبراءِthe dusty يَوماًa day مُطَنَّباlong-drawn-out
إِلى القَيعَةِ الغَبراءِ يَوماً مُطَنَّبا
We slew them in the stretch from an open rocky height
We killed them between one released fort
To the dusty plain, on a long-drawn-out day.
