سَقىmay He water اللَهُGod قَتلىthe slain بِالفُراتِbeside the Euphrates مُقيمَةًremaining there
وَأُخرىand others بَأَثباجِon the heights of النِجافِal-Nijaf الكَوانِفِsurrounding
May God water the slain who lie beside the Euphrates,
God watered some slain near the Euphrates
and others on al-Nijaf's surrounding heights.
And others near Athbaj of lofty Najaf.
فَنَحنُfor we وَطِئناwe trampled بِالكَواظِمِat al-Kawazim هُرمُزاًHurmuz

وَبِالثَنيِand at al-Thani قَرنَيthe two horns of قارِنٍQarin بِالجَوارِفِwith sweeping hosts
For we trampled Hurmuz at al-Kawazim,
We marched to Hormuz with the Kawazim
and, at al-Thani, Qarin's two horns, with sweeping hosts.
And the twin horns of Qarnayn at Jaraf.

And the day we surrounded the palaces, there followed in turn
When we besieged the palaces, there followed
upon spacious al-Hirah one of fortune's reversals.
At Hirah and Rawhaa a bloody aftermath.
حَطَطناهُمُwe brought them down مِنهاfrom them وَقَدand already كادَalmost عَرشُهُمtheir throne

We brought them down from those palaces, when their throne had nearly
We made them descend from there while their throne
tilted with them, like a defiant coward.
Almost toppled with them by acts of the coward.

We assailed them with the east wind, when they had seen
We shot at them accepting the arrows while they saw
death's evening draught around those places of livelihood,
The signs of death around those arrow-slits.

on the morning they said, 'We are a people who descended
At dawn they said: “We are a folk who descended
to the fertile countryside from the land of the Arab clans.'
To the open country from the land of veiled Arabs.”
