- أبلغ أبا مروان أن عطاءهTell Abu Marwan that his gift
- أبني تميم ما لمنبر ملككمO sons of Tamim, what ails the pulpit of your rule?
- أتدعوني الأقيشر ذلك اسميDo you call me al-Uqayshir? That is my name.
- إذا صليت خمسا كل يومIf I offer five prayers every day,
- أقول والكأس في كفي أقلبهاI speak, turning the cup over in my palm,
- ألا أبلغ لديك أبا هشامListen, convey this to Abu Hisham there with you:
- ألا إنما الإنسان غمد لقلبهTake heed: a person is but a sheath for his heart.
- ألا يا دوم دام لك النعيمAh, O Dawm, may bliss endure for you,
- ألم تر قيس الأكمه ابن محمدHave you not seen Qays the blind-born, son of Muhammad?
- إما تراني قد هلكت فإنماIf you see that I have perished, it is only
- إن كانت الخمر قد عزت وقد منعتEven if wine has grown scarce and been forbidden,
- إنما لقحتنا باطيةOur milch camel is but a wine bowl;
- إني أتاني مقال كنت آمنهIndeed, a remark reached me that I had felt safe from.
- أيا صاحبي أبشر بزورتنا الحمىO my friend, rejoice at our visit to the protected grounds,
- تريك القذى من دونها وهي دونهThe fleck shows you not itself but what's beyond
- تقول يا شيخ أما تستحيYou say, "O sheikh, are you not ashamed
- تميم بن مر كفكفوا عن تعمديTamim son of Murr, cease deliberately subjecting me
- جريت مع الصبا طلق العتيقI raced with youth at a thoroughbred’s gallop,
- حضرموت فتشت أحسابناHadramawt has scrutinized our pedigrees.
- خرجت من المصر الحواري أهلهI left the city whose people are fair-skinned,
- رب ندمان كريم ماجدMany a noble, glorious, generous man
- سألت ربيعة من شرهاI asked Rabīʿah who among them was worst
- سألني الناس أين يعمد هذاThe people asked me, “Where is this man heading?”
- سريع إلى ابن العم يلطم وجههHe is quick to go to his cousin and slap his face,
- عاهدت زوجها وقد قال إنيShe made a pact with her husband, who had said: 'I
- عدمت أبا الذيال من ذي نوالةMay I be rid of Abu al-Dhayyal, that man of bounty,
- غضبت دودان من مسجدناDudan grew angry at our mosque,
- غلب الصبر فاعترتني همومPatience was overcome, and worries beset me
- فإن أبا معرض إذ حساFor Abu Mu'arridh when he tasted
- فلا أسدا أسب ولا تميماI bear neither lion nor Tameem any malice
- فليت زيادا لا يزلن بناتهOh daughters of Ziyad do not cease to die
- في فتية جعلوا الصليب إلههمAmong young men who made the cross their god,
- قرب الله بالسلام وحياMay God bring near with peace and greet
- كفاني المجوسي مهر الربابThe Magian has taken care of Rabab’s bride-price for me;
- لم يغرر بذات خف سواناNo creature with a padded hoof was ever duped but us,
- وأسعدتها أكف غير مقرفةAnd hands of pure lineage lent her aid,
- وسألتني يوم الرحيل قصائداAnd you asked me for poems on the day of departure;
- وصهباء جرجانية لم يطف بهاAnd a tawny wine from Jurjan, never approached
- وفد الوفود فكنت أول وافدThe delegations arrived, and you were the first to arrive,
- ومسوف نشد الصبوح صبحتهAnd one kept waiting who asked for the morning draught—I served him,
- ومقعد قوم قد مشى من شرابناMany a crippled man in a company has walked, thanks to our wine;
- ومن لي بأن أسطيع أن أذكر اسمهAnd who can assure me that I can mention his name,
- يا أيها السائل عما مضىO you who ask about what has passed
- يا بغل بغل أبي مضاء تعلمنO mule, mule of Abu Maḍāʾ, know full well
- يا خليلي أسقياني كاساO my two friends, pour me a cup—
- يريد النساء ويأبى الرجالHe desires women and refuses men.
- يسائلني هشام عن صلاتيHisham asks me about my prayers—
- يقولون لي انكه قد شربت مدامةThey say to me, “Breathe out—you have drunk wine.”
