عَدِمتُmay I be bereft of أَباAbu (father of) الذَيّالِal-Dhayyal مِنof ذيone possessing نَوالَةٍbounty
لَهُhe has فيin بُيوتِthe houses of العاهِراتِthe prostitutes طَريقُa path
May I be rid of Abu al-Dhayyal, that man of bounty,
I blamed Abu Dhiyāl, a frequenter of brothels,
Who has a path into the houses of prostitutes.
He who travels the road to houses of harlots.
أَباO Abu (father of) الخَمرِal-Khamr (wine) عَيَّرتَyou reproached اِمرَأًa man لَيسَis not مُقلِعاًdesisting
وَذَلِكَand that رَأيٌa resolve لَوif عَلِمتَyou knew وَثيقُfirm
O Abu al-Khamr, you reproached a man who will not desist,
Abu al-Khamr, you reproached a man who isn’t a teetotaler -
And that, if you knew, is a firm resolve.
That’s an opinion which, had you known better, you wouldn’t keep.
سَأَشرَبُهاI shall drink it ماas long as دُمتُI remain حَيّاًalive فَإِنand if أَمُتI die
فَفيthen in النَفسِthe soul مِنهاfrom it زَفرَةٌa sigh وَشَهيقُand a gasp
I shall drink it as long as I live; and if I die,
I’ll drink it as long as I live, and if I die,
Then in my soul there will be a sigh and a gasp for it.
My soul will exhale and inhale it one final time.
