جَرَيتُI raced مَعَwith الصِباyouth طَلقَat the gallop of العَتيقِthe thoroughbred
وَهانَand came easily عَلَيَّto me مَأثورُthe handed-down ways of الفُسوقِdebauchery
I raced with youth at a thoroughbred’s gallop,
I roamed with the morning breeze, free and unconfined,
And the old ways of debauchery came easily to me.
And the inherited traditions of corruption disgusted me.
وَجَدتُI found أَلَذَّthe sweetest عارِيَةِloan of اللَياليthe nights
قِرانَthe joining of النَغمِmelody بِالوَتَرِwith the string الخَفوقِquivering
I found the nights’ sweetest loan
I found the sweetest intimacy in the bareness of the nights
To be melody joined to the quivering string,
When melody wedded the pulsating string.
وَمُسمِعَةًand a songstress إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle شِئتُI wished غَنَّتshe sang
مَتىwhen نَزَلَalighted الأَحِبَّةُthe loved ones بِالعَقيقِat al-ʿAqīq
And a songstress who, whenever I wished, sang:
And whenever I wished, she sang for me,
“When did the loved ones alight at al-ʿAqīq?”
When the loved ones camped at Al-Aqiq.
