صَلاةِthe prayer المُسلِمينَof the Muslims فَقُلتُso I said خَمسُfive
Hisham asks me about my prayers—
Hisham asks me about my prayers
the prayers of Muslims; I replied, 'Five.'
The prayers of Muslims, I said, are five
صَلاةُthe prayer العَصرِof the afternoon وَالأولىand the first ثَمانٍeight
مُواتَرَةًin succession فَماso there is no فيهِنَّin them لَبسُconfusion
The afternoon prayer and the first total eight units,
The afternoon prayer and the first, then three
in succession, with no confusion in them.
In succession, in them there is no confusion
وَعِندَand at مَغيبِthe setting قَرنِof the horn الشَمسِof the sun وِترٌan odd number
وَشَفعٌand an even number بَعدَهاafter it فيهِنَّin them حَبسُa pause
And at the setting of the sun's horn, an odd-numbered prayer,
And at sunset an odd prayer
and an even-numbered one afterward, with a pause in them.
And an even one after it, in them there is devotion
وَغُدوَةًand early in the morning اِثنَتانِtwo مَعاًtogether جَميعاًall together
وَلَمّاand not yet تَبدُhas appeared لِلرائينَto those who watch شَمسُthe sun
And early in the morning, two units together, both of them,
And two together in the morning
while the sun has not yet appeared to those who watch.
When the sun appears to those who see
وَبَعدَهُماand after the two of them لِوَقتِهِماat their appointed time صَلاةٌa prayer
لِنُسكٍfor worship بِالضُحاءِin the forenoon إِذاwhen نَبُسُwe set out (uncertain reading)
And after those two, at their appointed time, a prayer
And after them a prayer for their time
for worship in the forenoon, when we set out.
For a ritual at midday when it is hot
أَأَحصَيتَhave you counted? الصَلاةَthe prayers أَباO father of هِشامٍHisham
فَذاكَfor that fellow مُكَدِّرُone who sours الأَخلاقِdispositions جِبسُa base wretch
Have you counted the prayers, Abu Hisham?
Have you enumerated the prayers, Abu Hisham?
For that fellow sours tempers—a base wretch.
That is what corrupts manners, obstinacy
تَعَوَّدَhe grew accustomed أَنto يُلامَbeing blamed فَلَيسَso there is not يَوماًon any day
بِحامِدِهِone who praises him إِلىto الأَقوامِthe people إِنسُa human being
He has grown accustomed to being blamed; never
He is accustomed to being blamed so he is not
does any human being praise him to the people.
A day praising him among the people, friendly
