لولا حميد لم يكن
Without Humeid there would be
وغيث تألفه نوؤه
And a rain cloud which his stars have befriended
أبو دلف كالطبل يذهب صوته
Abu Dulaf is like a drum whose sound fades
والجود في كف غيره خشن
Giving through another's hand is harsh and crude,
عسى فرج يكون عسى
Hope relief may come, hope
بأبي من زارني مكتتما
By the one whose visitor came to me concealing,
دمن الدار دثور
The abodes are desolate,
ألا يا ربع بالهضب
O quarter in the highlands
وخافت على التطواف فوتى وإنما
She feared missing circumambulation, though
أللدهر تبكي أم على الدهر تجزع
Do you weep for Time or despair over fate?
تكفل ساكني الدنيا حميد
Take care, people of this world
أبا دلف السماحة لم تزل
Abu Dulaf, your forbearance remained
أبو دلف إن تلقه تلق ماجدا
Abu Dulaf, if you meet him, you meet one who is glorious,
رجل أبر على شجاعة عامر
A man excelled in the courage of Aamir
عللاني بصفو ما في الدنان
Reason with me with the purity of what is in the religion,
إن أبا غانم حميدا
Indeed Abu Ghanim is praised
جعل الله مدخل الصوم فوزا
God made the entrance of fasting a salvation
جلال مشيب نزل
The glory of gray hair has come down
ألا رب هم يمنع النوم دونه
Alas! For every care that keeps off sleep
إنما الدنيا حميد
The world is but a transient home,
ما قال لا قط من جود أبو دلف
Abu Dulaf never said "No" to a request,
إذا ما تردى لأمة الحرب أرعدت
When war's clamor rises for the nation
ألا قاتل الله الألى كفروا به
Alas may Allah destroy those disbelievers
يا عصمة العرب التي لولم تكن
O pillar of the Arabs, if you did not exist
غدا بأمير المؤمنين ويمنه
Tomorrow the Commander of the Faithful will come
لا تتركني بباب الدار مطرحا
Do not leave me lying at your door
من ملك الموت إلى قاسم
From the angel of death to Qasim
إذا اتسعت لم يلحق الذر شأوها
When it expands, a speck cannot reach its end,
ذاد ورد الغي عن صدره
He warded off the thorns of youth from his chest,
عجبت لحراقة ابن الحسين
I am amazed at the craft of Ibn al-Husayn
يا بائع الزيت عرج غير مرموق
O you who sell oil, walk away from the disreputable
ترى فوقها نمشا للمزاج
You see above it a subtlety of mood
أعطيتني يا ولي الحق مبتدئا
O just guardian, from the start you gave me
راعه الشيب إذ نزل
Old age came upon him as he descended,
نبهت عن سنة عينيك فاصطبر
Your eyes have warned of a tradition, so be patient
جفا طرب الفتيان وهو طروب
Harshness troubled the youth though frolic it was,
حيدى حياد فإن غزوة جيشه
Turn away in indifference, for the onslaught of his army
أليأس عز والذلة الطمع
Is despair honorable, and is greed humiliation?
أغر توالد الشهوات منه
More captivating is the sequence of desires
وأبيض عجلي رأيت غمامه
I saw the cloud of a swift white stallion
ولما انقضى عصر الشباب وعهده
When youth's spring had passed, its epoch done,
بأبي مالك عني
By my father Malik, turn from me,
وأرى الليالي ما طوت من قوتي
And I see the nights have folded away my strength
لو أن لي صبرها أو عندها جزعى
If I had her patience, or if I had her despair
تحدر ماء الجود من صلب آدم
لو لمس الناس راحتيه
ريعت لمنشور على مفرقه
للعيد يوم من الأيام منتظر
للهيثم بن عدي نسبة جمعت
إن توطني العجز فحزمى عندي
كأن أرماحه تعطى إذا عملت
حجابك ضيق ونداك نزر
دع الدنيا فللدنيا أناس
دجلة تسقى وأبو غانم
وشمول أرقها الدهر حتى
مالي ومالك قد كلفتني شططا
تسىء ولا تستنكر السوء إنها
أبيت فما تسعف
خلفتني نضو أحزان أعالجها
إني ليقنعني تعدد شكلة
أقاموا الديدبان على يفاع
بطاعة الله طلت الناس كلهم
هل بالطلول لسائل رد
هجرتك لما أهجرك من كفر نعمة
