1. The abodes are desolate,
In them there is no confusion,
١. دِمَنُ الدارِ دُثورَ
لَيسَ فيهِنَّ مُحيرُ
2. The songs have worn out in them,
As lines of poetry wear out.
٢. بَلِيَت مِنها المَغاني
مِثلَما تَبلى السُطورُ
3. Separation has divided among them,
Spirits and early mornings,
٣. قَسَمَ البَينَ عَلَيهنْ
نَ رَواحٌ وَبُكورُ
4. And nights conversing,
While the night companion sleeps.
٤. وَلَيالٍ ساجِياتٍ
نامَ عَنهُنَّ السَميرُ
5. So they folded the tent of life,
As silk is folded.
٥. فَطَوَت أَخبِيَةَ الحَيْ
يِ كَما يُطوى الحَبيرُ
6. They dragged them and ran away,
From the intent of separation furious.
٦. فَاِستَجَرَّتهُم فَدَوَّت
مِن نَوى البَينِ جَرورُ
7. And in your eyes the burdens of life,
And separation is quick.
٧. وَبِعَينَيكَ حُمولُ الْ
حيِّ وَالبَينُ الشَطيرِ
8. Like palm branches they displayed
Their beauty as the winds blew.
٨. كَذُرا النَخلِ أَشاعَت
زَهوَها الريحُ الدَبورُ
9. Left behind in the abode are maidens,
Who in the loops became maidens.
٩. خُلِّفَت بِالدارِ حورٌ
وَغَدَت في الظُعنِ حورُ
10. Changing what the revolving one changed in it,
And the resident.
١٠. بُدِّلا ما اِستُبدِلَ الدا
ئِرُ فيها وَالمُديرُ
11. Scattered are disgusted ones,
Not disciplined by manners.
١١. نُفَّرٌ مُستَجفِلاتٌ
لَم تُرَبِّبها الخُدورُ
12. Sometimes I visit the family,
Arriving unexpectedly and stealthily moving.
١٢. رُبَّما أَعتَسِفُ العي
سَ أُسَدّي وَأَسيرُ
13. And I visit the lonely ruins,
Hidden by the curtains.
١٣. وَأَزورُ الكاعِبَ الخَو
دَ تُواريها السُتورُ
14. For the eyes of the abode are pictures,
And the neighbor is good.
١٤. إِذ عُيونُ الدارِ صورٌ
وَإِذا الجيرَةُ خيرُ
15. Excuse me, for foolishness
From an elder to an elder.
١٥. إِعذِلي إِنَّ سَفاهاً
مِن كَبيرٍ لَكَبيرُ
16. Your eye grew accustomed to my eye,
But that tyrant refused.
١٦. أَلَفَت عَينُكِ عَيني
فَأًَبى ذاكَ القَتيرُ
17. He left me and your cheeks,
Nothing to fear the jealous one.
١٧. لَم يَدَع لي وَلِأَخدا
نِكِ ما يَخشى الغَيورُ
18. So sleep while your eye is adorned,
And sleep is abundant.
١٨. فَاِرقُدي ما وَسِنَت عَي
ناكِ وَالنَوم غَزيرُ
19. The tree branch and the doe are restless upon it,
And the cuckoo bird.
١٩. قَلِقَ الجَسرَةُ وَالرَح
لُ عَلَيها وَالضُفورُ
20. Like the bitter aloe is twisted,
And the night is ungenerous.
٢٠. وِقِرانُ البيدِ بِالبي
دِ كَما يُلوى المَريرُ
21. A cat I struggled with,
And the night is disbelieving.
٢١. وَقَطاً نازَعتُهُ المَو
رِدَ وَاللّيلُ كَفورُ
22. It did not leave in its regions,
From the dawn remnants.
٢٢. لَم يَذَرَّفي نَواحي
هِ مِن الصُبحِ ذَرورُ
23. With gazelles it divided,
From them the she-oryx fled.
٢٣. بِنَواجٍ حَزَّ مِنهُنْ
ن النَجاءُ المُستَطيرُ
24. For Humaid and Humaid is
The shining moon of the earth.
٢٤. لِحُمَيدٍ وَحمَيدٌ
قَمَرُ الأَرضِ المُنيرُ
25. If Humaid protected the world,
There would be in it no poor.
٢٥. لَو حَمى الدُنيا حمَيدٌ
لَم يَكُن فيها فَقيرُ
26. A king whose both hands
Are overflowing with gifts.
٢٦. مَلِكٌ كِلتا يَدَيهِ
بِعَطاياهُ دَرورُ
27. And both his days in the land
Are bearers of good news and warners.
٢٧. وَكِلا يَومَيهِ في الأَر
ضِ بَشيرٌ وَنَذيرُ
28. Arrogant in command, the proud,
Do not attain his lofty aims.
٢٨. مُستَبِدُّ الشَأوِ لا يَبْ
لُغُ مَسعاهُ الفَخورُ
29. Indeed whoever strives in the horizon,
Seeking to peer, will be wretched.
٢٩. إِنَّ مَن حاوَلَ في الأُف
قِ اِطِّلاعاً لَحَسيرُ
30. And suffice him that he is vile,
While the seas cannot reach his height.
٣٠. وَكَفاهُ أَنَّهُ يَمٌّ
تُساميهِ البُحورُ
31. Easy going, spending money,
And with the sword a butcher.
٣١. أَريَحِيٌّ مُنهِبُ الما
لِ وَبِالسَيفِ شَتورُ
32. And a rider who stirred anxiety,
Feared by the brave.
٣٢. وَرَكوبٌ ثَبَجَ الخُطَّ
ةِ يَخشاها الجَسورُ
33. Humaid guaranteed the land,
So he is for the land a guard.
٣٣. ضَمِنَ الأَرضَ حُمَيدٌ
فَهوَ لِلأَرضِ خَفيرُ
34. With a hand that draws from behind,
So it brings victory and destroys.
٣٤. بِيَدٍ تَنَهلُّ خِلفَي
نِ فَتُحي وَتُبيرُ
35. Money is restless in it,
And through it sorrows are consoled.
٣٥. يَقلَقُ المالُ عَلَيها
وَبِها تَشجى الدّثورُ
36. Silent, so dignity was kindled,
And it was purified by honor.
٣٦. صامِتيٌّ فَرَعَ المَج
دَ وَزَكَّتهُ النُجورُ
37. So for him is never-ending praise,
And for him is the final praise.
٣٧. فَلَهُ الحَمدُ المُبَدّى
وَلَهُ الحَمدُ الأَخيرُ
38. People were troubled and proceeded,
In the Nile what is in it is the remains.
٣٨. كَدِرَ الناسُ وَصا
في النَيلِ ما فيهَ الأَخيرُ
39. And swift with gifts,
And in frightening firm.
٣٩. وَعَجولٌ بِعَطايا
وَعَلى الرَوعِ قَتورُ
40. How dear is the one God supports,
Other than Him one seeks refuge!
٤٠. ما أَعَزَّ اللَهُ جاراً
بِسِواهُ يَستَجيرُ
41. O Abu Ghanim the protected,
Against whom sorrows narrow.
٤١. يا أَبا غانِمَ الغُن
مُ عَلى مَن يَستَميرُ
42. O guardian of security when
Fears tighten the chests.
٤٢. وَأَبا الأَمنِ إِذا ضا
قَت مِنَ الخَوفِ الصُدورُ
43. Through you the pillar of earth is firm,
And the mill of kingship turns.
٤٣. بِكَ رُكنُ الأَرضِ يَرسو
وَرحى المُلكِ يَدورُ
44. You are a supporter of the kingdom,
And for you God is a supporter.
٤٤. أَنتَ لِلمُلكِ نَصيرٌ
وَلَكَ اللَهُ نَصيرُ
45. The thoughts of many turn,
Deceived by you arrogance and pomp.
٤٥. رُبَّ مُلتَفِّ السَرايا
غَرهُ مِنكَ الغَرورُ
46. He is tempted by ease of blessing,
And the glittering illusion of power.
٤٦. أَبطَرَتهُ دَعَةُ النِع
مَةِ وَالعِزُّ النَميرُ
47. He grew accustomed to betrayal upon betrayal,
Inciting and changing.
٤٧. أَلِفَ النُكث إِلى النُك
ثِ يُغَزّي وَيُغيرُ
48. You led him with the horses, a leading,
The day of the leading of horses in file.
٤٨. قُدتَهُ بِالخَيلِ قَوداً
يَومَ قَودِ الخَيلِ زورُ
49. And a Thursday when the land,
Is grasped for him, a brief shadow.
٤٩. وَخَميسٍ تُقبَضُ الأَر
ضُ لَهُ ظَلَّ يَسيرُ
50. Your steps reach the white,
And the leader of the line the tree.
٥٠. تَصِلُ البيضَ خُطاه
وَقَنا الخَطِّ شَجيرُ
51. And he whispers in it to death,
My days and nights.
٥١. وَيُناجي فيهِ لِلمَو
تِ أَيامَي وَتَمورُ
52. Like one who turned to him,
The patient twisting fate.
٥٢. مِثلَ ما لَفَّ إِلَيهِ
قَزَعَ المُزنِ الصَبيرُ
53. You have left the birds that came
Suddenly while he is barren.
٥٣. قَد تَرَكت الطَيرَ جاءَت
لِمَّةً وَهوَ عَقيرُ
54. The questioning empty mind,
Seeks from him and the opinion.
٥٤. يَستَهِلُّ العَلَقُ السا
ئِلُ مِنهُ وَالنَعيرُ
55. You are for the dawn radiance,
The dawn has no rejecter.
٥٥. أَنتَ لِلصُّبحِ ضِياءٌ
لَيسَ لِلَصُّبحِ نَكيرُ
56. And to your glory grows,
Every glory and is humbled.
٥٦. وَإِلى مَجدِكَ يَنمى
كُلُّ مَجدٍ وَيَحورُ
57. And the palm of your hand is an ocean,
From which oceans split.
٥٧. وَنَدى كَفَّيكَ بَحرٌ
مِنهُ تَنشَقُّ البُحورُ
58. Everyone with long glory,
Is short next to your lofty aims.
٥٨. كُلُّ ذي مَجدٍ طَوِيلٍ
عِندَ مَسعاكَ قَصيرُ
59. And little from your hands,
Upon the people is great.
٥٩. وَقَليلٌ مِن أَيادي
كَ عَلى الناسِ كَثيرُ
60. So live beyond what is counted,
Of lifetimes, years, and months.
٦٠. فَاِبقَ ما عُدَّ مِنَ الدَه
رِ سُنوهُ وَالشُهورُ
