فتى كان للرمح الأسن محطما

ضمن القنان لفقعس سوآتها

The vessel concealed Faga'us's faults

فلا تأمن النوكى وإن كان دارهم

جزى الله خيرا والجزاء بكفه بني

تطاول هذا الليل ما كاد ينجلي

طرقت أسيماء الرحال ودونها

The howdahs of travelers marched on, below them

بنفسي خليلاي اللذان تبرضا

With myself a friend who has rejected me

قال الأقارب لا تغررك كثرتنا

The relatives said: "Don't be deceived by our great number,

إذا قال غاو من معد قصيدة

When an errant person from Ma’ad recites a poem,

ومولى عصاني واستبد برأيه

A rebellious slave who imposed his will

إذا فات منك الأطيبان فلا تبل

If the two finest ones pass you by, do not fret,

غلامان خاضا الموت من كل جانب

Two youths faced death from every side,

أغر كمصباح الدجنة يتقي

He shines like a lamp in the darkest night,

أرى كل عود نابتا في أرومة

I see every branch growing in a meadow

إنا محيوك يا سلمى فحيينا

We greet you, O Salma, so greet us!

أبكي الفتى الأبيض البهلول سنته

I weep for the noble white knight whose habit

ونحن منعنا الحي أن يتقسموا

أجدك شاقتك الرسوم الدوارس

وما زال ركني يرتقي من ورائه

تخليت من داء امرىء لم أكن له

ومن يحلم وليس له سفيه
