وحمراء خلناها أذاعت وأضمرت

A blushing red we left exposed it spread and smoldered

لدي منقاش بديع له

I have a wonderful comb

ومجدولة مثل رأس القناة

And braided like the head of a channel

فالوذج يمنع من نيله

Its model prevents it from attaining

ومستنتج ما بين خل وسكر

And I deduce what's between vinegar and sugar

سفينة لا على ماء ملجلجة

A ship not on raging seas,

وخبازة لا تغذي الرقاق

A bakery that does not feed thin bread

ومقعد لي وطئ

I have a seat well trodden

وشفافة مثل النسيم كأنها

Through crystal waters flow, as pure as dew

وحديقة تهتز فيها دوحة

A palm tree sways in it, a garden

عندي للأكل إذا

When it is time to eat

ركية من الزجاج الصافي

A dewdrop of pure glass

شمس لها من نفسها أرجل

A sun that has legs of its own

لو كنت معنى بديع اللفظ مخترعا

Roses are red, violets are blue

ركية تشف ذات طول

A long tube of polished glass

ورب فقاعة رأيت بها

By the Lord, I saw a bubble

ومبيضة فيها طرائق خضره

With paths of green that whiten in its midst

وضاحك في الجام من تفصيل

With laughter in the cup, meticulously

ماوية في النار مصلية

Swaying in the flames, bowing down to pray

أنا بين أحشاء الليالي نار

I am fire amid the bosom of nights,

أهيف قد زاحم الحسان على

Has the crescent gleamed, usurping

وأسمر قد لفح السعير اهابه

His dark face scorched by the flame’s hot breath,

وباقلاء أزهر

With clover blossoming,

ومستجن من الجانين ممتنع

A pearl from jinni's oysters unharvested,

مثقفة جوفاء تحسب زانة

A shallow intellectual posing as promiscuous

وشبيه للشمس يسترف إلا

Like the sun he gazes, craving news

وكأس من الجلاب أطفأ بردها

A goblet of snow to extinguish

أرض من العقيان

A land of lilies

غرامي يابن المباركة التي

My love, O son of the blessed one

لي على الناس فضل نظم وعلم

I have excellence over people in prosody and knowledge

ورائق مثل الهواء صافي

Pure as clear air,

أهيف قد ابدت ذراه غربا

The winds have turned westward,

أبى طارق الطيف إلا غرورا

My companion's phantom refuses all but false hopes

يروقني العناب

The jujube delights me

وبيت لبنات الجو

The house of daughters of the air

كم تكون المزورات غذائي

How your advice is so untrue

الأرض ياقوتة والجو لؤلؤة

The earth an emerald, the sky a pearl

طرا طارئ عند العشاء فجئته

A stray guest arrived at supper, so I brought him

ولست وأن قلت القريض بشاعر

Though I profess no skill in verse

وكان العرار راحة داع

The bare ground was a place of rest

ورب سوس من الاترج

And the lord of juices from the squeezed

سألت الله مبتهلا مناكا

I implored God pleadingly for support,

أحب من الحلواء ما كان مشبها

I love the sweetest that resembles

وضرب من ثمار الصيف يحكي

It strikes with the fruits of summer, telling

قد وجدنا خطا الكلام فساحا

We found faults in speech so we made

منشفة خملها تخال بها

A cloth whose creases suggest

جوذابة فوارة

Beautiful overflowing cups

أم القرى عندك أم يوح

O mother of villages, do you have a mother Eve

ما ترى النار كيف اسقمها القر

You see not how the fire ails

ليس على المأمور من سبة

The commanded bears no fault,

وبديعة للريم منها جيدها

With a graceful neck like a tender branch,

ورب ماء من الشهد

By the Lord of the pure waters

وسكر ليس من

Sugar that is not extracted from sugar cane,

حق خليع ناصع دهنه

Truth's scoundrel shines with oil

وباقلاء عامر طيبها

With evergreen broad beans, its goodness is blessed

وبيت كأحشاء المجب دخلته

I entered a house like the inner chambers of a tomb

هذي عزائم عتبي تفرق ما

These are the resolves of my reproach that separate

لدي مشطان ذا كباز

I have two combs, one white

وذات شب في يدي قائم

One night in my hand erect

ومرتبة من بوادي الملوك

And a carpet laid out from the lands of nightfall

أهليلج خلناه لما بدا

My dear, when it began

وعالم بالغيب من غير ما

He knows the unseen without hearing, heart, or eyes.

وبيضاء كالبلور جاد بها الحيا

White as crystal, life bestowed upon her wings,

أجد صنع المباني حين تبنى

I see the buildings constructed, as they are built,

جمعت حباب الكأس حتى لحقته

I gathered the bubbles of the cup until I reached it

خبيصة في الجام قد قدمت

A tiny one in the cup was brought

خبز الأبازير منى كل من

The round flatbread of the Abbasids is wished for by all

رمانة ما زلت مستخرجا

Pomegranate, you still extract

ومحقق التدوير يبعد نفعه

The achiever of recycling removes its benefit

لدي ذو نايين أعضلين

I have two flutes, most beautiful,

أنابيب من القند

Pipes of sugar

الملح ما أكثر إبزاره

The salt holder - how plentiful are its tools!

قد بعثنا بذات لون بديع

I sent forth one whose hue gleamed bright,

وذي أذنين لا تعيان قولا

With ears that hear not a word

إني أنا الترس بنفسي أقي

I am the shield itself, I protect

لحجر الحمام عندي يد

The pigeon's stone I hold in hand

وواضعة خدها في الصعيد

With her cheek resting on the ground

وأبيض اللون أودعناه صافية

Pure white in color we left it

حكم الضيوف بهذا الربع أنفذ من

The rule of guests in this abode is more binding than

وأسود أحشاء الدوي مقره

In the dark heart of the rolling storm

وبيض إذا ما لحن في الجام خلتها

And white, when it wavers in the goblet, I mistook it

أجسام صخر دفنت في صخر

Bodies of rock buried in rock

ومستوقف لجلوس الحضور

And a place to sit for all to gather

وبيض ظنناهن والجام محدق

With fair hopes we deemed them, and the cup was gazing

أتحفوني على الخوان بمقطوب

You serve me at the table a drink

وقشمش كخزز

Clashing and clinking

وكأس جلاب بها يطفى اللهب

A crystal cup, where burning thirst is quenched,

وذات لطف كقطر ضمنت يققا

With a gentle charm like a drop of dew

أحق بيت من بيوت الورى

The most honorable house on earth

ومجدولة حمرا يخيل متنها

Her body is like a red rosebud, it seems

وطاعنة جلباب كل دجنة

Stabbing the gown of every docile one

فضلت جميع الأواني وفقت

I preferred all vessels and made them harmonious,

لليف في تنظيف

أبنية فياحة منيرة

لدينا نديم لم يزل طول يومه

وصاحبين اتفقا

ياقوته ما ضمها مخنقه

عندي للضيف عجة شرقت

وضرب من الحلوى أكني عن اسمه

ليس الإناء بحافظ مستودعا

لم يرض طاهيها بنقص ولا

ولا تظنن أن السيف مبتسم

حجارة من صنيع الدهر تمتعنا

تثور إذا كشفوا رأسها

ماوية فضية لحمها

وطائفي من الزبيب به

ومرهفة أرق شبا وأمضى

أرى طهرا سيثمر بعد عرس

يا ربع لو كنت دمعا فيك منسكبا

الطيب يهدى وتستهدى طرائفه

لنا من الأسطال سطل

وافت تخطى في ثلاث مدارع

جد لي من النقل بذاك الذي

هريسة خلتها وقد ملأ

وذات احمرار صادق اللون خلقها

جبال الحجا أسد الوغى غصص العدا

ولوزينج يعزى الى الفرس خلته

محققة ملء الكفوف كأنها

سيخلف جفني مخلفات الغمائم

إذا الغيث وفى الروض واجب حقه

وحمام له حر الجحيم

وقائمة بين الجلوس على شوى

لا تدن مني الملح إن شبته

ولوزينج يشفي السقيم كأنه

وقوارة من أديم الصخور

ومقتعد يعجب الناظرينا

وليل كأني فيه انسان ناظر
