1. My companion's phantom refuses all but false hopes
Intending for your imagination not to visit

2. I do not dislike the phantom itself
But I dislike false hopes of connection

3. I complain to Allah about myself wandering in bewilderment
My sides contain its raging fire

4. A friend leaves me every day
And a tribe grieves me every day

5. If you two ask me, my friends
The core of the secret you will find me an expert

6. For each day you see me, the riders
I leave a land and settle a region

7. When I leave my companion I say count
For my return, years and empty months

8. You see me as twenty years old or less
My hair has covered the earth graying

9. If I say a rhyme it does not stop
Roaming the plains and crossing the ruggedness

10. If the dead could boast over the living
Abu Hashim would boast of me

11. If I sought what I deserve
I would seek nothing but the bed

12. If I walked, the kings of cities would call
"The procession, the procession" before me

13. But I am content with little
When Allah makes that little easy

14. When most people revile the clouds
I smell not on earth but much

15. A young man whose cloak contains
Nobleness, glory, virtue and goodness

16. If you grasp him in friendship you will find him
A raining cloud, an illuminating full moon

17. And if you present him publicly you will find him
A sharpened sword and a mighty lion

18. Sometimes beneficial, sometimes destructive
Sometimes merciful, sometimes harsh

19. You see in his particles the tongue of purpose
Long yet selling the nights short

20. His family contains from him intelligence
And the wise carry from him wisdom

21. To you from poetry an unsullied one that
Folded Tai and drew Jurair

22. When I recite her she silences time
And makes the rocks hear my words

23. If the hearts of the listeners
Could extend I would pour to the chests

24. I do not seek a gift for her
Except to deliver my matter to the prince

25. For you are a hand and tongue for it
If fate brings great concerns

26. You two have not ceased to defend glory
The prince is called and the minister is called
