- أتت عصبة للأوس تخطر بالقناA band of al-Aws came striding proudly with spears,
- أتعرف رسما كاطراد المذاهبDo you recognize a trace, like watercourses running on,

- أجود بمضنون التلاد وإننيI give freely of treasured ancestral wealth, and indeed I

- تذكر ليلى حسنها وصفاءهاHe remembered Layla—her beauty and purity;
- تروح من الحسناء أم أنت مغتديDo you leave the fair one at evening, or set out at dawn?
- تقول ابنة العمري آخر ليلهاThe daughter of al-ʿAmrī says at the end of her night,

- لأصرفن سوى حذيفة مدحتيI shall surely direct my praise to someone other than Hudhayfah—
- لعمرة إذ قلبه معجبHis heart was then enamored of ʿAmrah;
- لم تنسني أم عمار نوى قذفNo far-flung separation has made me forget Umm ʿAmmār,
- لو كنتم منا قريبا لخفتمIf you were close to us, you would fear
- مأوى الضريك إذا الرياح تناوحتA refuge for the destitute when the winds howled against one another,
- معاقلهم آجامهم ونساؤهمTheir refuges are their fortresses and their women;
- من يك غافلا لم يلق بؤساWhoever is heedless, having never known hardship,
- نحن بغرس الودي أعلمناWe are better versed in planting date-palm shoots
- والله لا يأتي بخير صديقها بنوBy God, no good will come to her friend
- وبعض القول ليس له عياجAnd some speech brings no benefit,
- وقد لاح في الصبح الثريا لمن رأىAnd at dawn the Pleiades shone for whoever looked,
- ولا ينسيني الحدثان عرضيNor do time’s vicissitudes make me forget my honor.
- وليس بنافع ذا البخل مالAnd wealth is of no benefit to the miser,
- ومن عادة الأيام أن خطوبهاAnd it is the way of days that, in their vicissitudes,
- يا عمرو إن تسد الأمانة بينناO ʿAmr, if you place a trust between us,
- يا عمرو قد أعجبتني من صاحبOh friend Amr, your ways have charmed me at times
- يقول لي الحداد وهو يقودنيThe jailer says to me as he leads me
