Desolate now, with my people no longer dwelling there,

Lie al-Jadr’s broad spaces, their uplands and valley flats.

Is Umm ʿAmr still true to the pledge?

Would that I knew—or has fate carried her off?

If you see us very few, like those driven

Away from owners of mangy camels—a small, healthy herd—

In them is forbearance toward those who deal gently,

And defiance when defiance is sought.
