مَعاقِلُهُمtheir refuges آجامُهُمtheir fortresses وَنِساؤُهُمand their women
مَعاقِلُهُم آجامُهُم وَنِساؤُهُم
وَأَيمانُناand our right hands بِالمَشرَفِيَّةِwith Mashrafi swords مُعقِلُa refuge
وَأَيمانُنا بِالمَشرَفِيَّةِ مُعقِلُ
Their refuges are their fortresses and their women;
Their fortresses and tents are ours, as are their women,
and our right hands, with Mashrafi swords, are a refuge.
And our oath to al-Musharifiyya is an impregnable fortress.
كَأَنَّas though رُؤوسَheads الخَزرَجِيِّينَthe Khazrajis إِذwhen بَدَتappeared
كَأَنَّ رُؤوسَ الخَزرَجِيِّينَ إِذ بَدَت
كَتائِبُناour battalions تَترىin succession مَعَwith الصُبحِthe dawn حَنظَلُbitter gourds
كَتائِبُنا تَترى مَعَ الصُبحِ حَنظَلُ
The Khazrajis' heads seemed—when there appeared
It was as if the heads of the Khazraj, when seen,
our battalions in succession at dawn—like bitter gourds.
Were like our battalions that march at dawn.
فَلاso do not تَقرَبواapproach جُذمانَJudhman إِنَّindeed حَمامَهُits doves
فَلا تَقرَبوا جُذمانَ إِنَّ حَمامَهُ
وَجَنَّتَهُand its garden تَأذىsuffer harm بِكُمfrom you فَتَحَمَّلواso depart
وَجَنَّتَهُ تَأذى بِكُم فَتَحَمَّلوا
So do not approach Judhman: its doves
So do not approach Judham, for its pigeons
and its garden are harmed by you, so depart.
And gardens would suffer harm from you, so be forewarned.
وَكائِنand how many رَأَيناwe have seen مِنamong أُناسٍpeople ذَويpossessed of غِنىًwealth
وَكائِن رَأَينا مِن أُناسٍ ذَوي غِنىً
وَجِدَّةِand ease عَيشٍof living أَصبَحواthey became قَدalready تَبَدَّلواchanged
وَجِدَّةِ عَيشٍ أَصبَحوا قَد تَبَدَّلوا
And how many people we have seen, possessed of wealth
Though we've seen people of riches
and ease of living, whose fortunes had changed!
And comfortable lives, they have now changed.
فَإِنso if تَكُyou are قَدalready أوتيتَyou were given مالاًwealth فَلاthen do not تَكُنbe
فَإِن تَكُ قَد أوتيتَ مالاً فَلا تَكُن
بِهِbecause of it بَطِراًarrogant وَالحالُand circumstances قَدmay تَتَحَوَّلُchange
بِهِ بَطِراً وَالحالُ قَد تَتَحَوَّلُ
So if you have been given wealth, do not be
If you've been granted wealth, do not
arrogant over it—circumstances may change.
Squander it, for one's state can change.
فَلَيسَso there is no عَلَيناagainst us قالَةٌreproach غَيرَexcept أَنَّناthat we
فَلَيسَ عَلَينا قالَةٌ غَيرَ أَنَّنا
نَسودُwe lead وَنَكفيand we meet needs كُلَّall ذَلِكَthat نَفعَلُwe do
نَسودُ وَنَكفي كُلَّ ذَلِكَ نَفعَلُ
So there is no reproach against us, except that we
It's not incumbent upon us, except that we
lead and meet others' needs; all this we do.
Will master all of that and suffice.
كَأَنّاas though we وَقَدand already أَجلَواthey withdrew لَناfor us عَنaway from نِسائِهِمtheir women
كَأَنّا وَقَد أَجلَوا لَنا عَن نِسائِهِم
أُسودٌlions لَهاthey have فيin عيصِa thicket بيشَةَBisha أَشبُلُlion cubs
أُسودٌ لَها في عيصِ بيشَةَ أَشبُلُ
We seemed, when they withdrew, leaving their women to us,
It's as if they've kept their women away from us
like lions with cubs in the thicket of Bisha,
And for them there are lions in ‘Ays Bishah.
بِبِئرِat the well of الدُرَيكِal-Durayk فَاِستَعِدّواso prepare yourselves لِمِثلِهاfor its like
بِبِئرِ الدُرَيكِ فَاِستَعِدّوا لِمِثلِها
وَأَصغواand incline لَهاtoward it آذانُكُمyour ears وَتَأَمَّلواand reflect
وَأَصغوا لَها آذانُكُم وَتَأَمَّلوا
at the well of al-Durayk—so prepare for its like,
So prepare for the like of Bi'r ad-Duriyk.
and lend it your ears, and reflect.
Listen to it with your ears and ponder.
