لَوif كُنتُمُyou were مِنّاto us قَريباًnear لَخِفتُمُyou would fear
سِبابيmy invective إِذاwhen أَنشَأتُI begin فيin شُرُبِdrinking الخَمرِwine
If you were close to us, you would fear
my invective when I take to drinking wine.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمِسماحُsurely open-handed العَشِيِّthe evening مُؤَزَّرٌwell-girded
أُسامِحُI deal generously فيover أَمثالِكُمthe likes of you عُصَبَbands of التَجرِthe traders
And I am indeed open-handed at evening, well-girded;
I deal generously with bands of traders over the likes of you.
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they إِذwhen واقَفونيthey stood facing me عَلىat مِنىًMinā
سُيولُtorrents of الحِجازِthe Hijaz ناطَحَتbutted against عُرُضَthe expanse of البَحرِthe sea
When they stood facing me at Minā, they were like
torrents of the Hijaz butting against the sea's expanse.
فَماfor ... not الأُسدُthe lions بِاللاتيthose whose الغَريفُal-Gharīf مَقيلُهاtheir noonday resting-place
وَلَكِنَّbut rather أُسدَthe lions of الغابِthe thickets حافَةَat the edge of ذيDhū الجَدرِal-Jadr
For the lions are not those whose noonday resting-place is al-Gharīf,
but rather the lions of the thickets at the edge of Dhū al-Jadr
بَنوthe sons of خَطمَةَKhaṭma الأَبطالُthe heroes إِنَّهُمُindeed they بِهاin it
غُذواthey were nourished وَعَلَيهاand upon it يَنشَأونَthey grow up يَدَthe full span of الدَهرِtime
are Banū Khaṭma, the heroes; for there they
were nourished, and there they grow up for all time.
