A refuge for the destitute when the winds howled against one another,
The refuge of the feeble when the winds contend,
Great in bounty, replenishing wealth and lavishing it away.
Of the giant evergreen leaving shreds behind,

So may the morning rainclouds water your grave, son of Mukaddam,
So the valleys watered your symbol, son of the wrinkled one,
With the downpour of every thundering, copiously raining cloud.
From the direction of every roaring and bargaining,

Tell the sons of Bakr, and single out the horsemen
Inform the Bakr tribe and especially the horsemen,
Who incurred reproach beneath every cloak:
Meet the blame before every quilt,
أَسلَمتُمُyou abandoned جِذلَstout trunk الطِعانِspear-fighting أَخاكُمُyour brother

بَينَ الكَديدِ وَقُلَّةِ الأَعرافِ
You abandoned the pillar of spear-fighting, your brother,
You surrendered the slanderer of your brother,
Between al-Kadid and the summit of al-A‘raf,
Between scarcity and few hilltops,

Until he fell, his limbs hanging slack,
Until his limbs fell sagging,
To the blade’s edge, among boulders and stony uplands.
For beheading between spies and sentry points,

God bless the sons of ‘Adi! Indeed, they
By God, the prominence of the ‘Adi tribe, they
Did not exact vengeance on ‘Awf and the clan of Khifaf.
Did not revenge ‘Auf and the living wraiths,
