زرت فتاة من بني هلال

I visited a girl from the tribe of Hilal

إن ابن يحيى عبيد الله أمنني

Son of Yahya, servant of God, brought me

إن حال لون الرأس عن حاله

If the color of the head changes from its condition,

كسح الهجر ساحة الوصل لما

The separation erased the field of union when

يطيب العيش أن تلقى حكيما

Life is sweet when you meet a wise one

قد عجن الهجر دقيق الهوى

Separation has kneaded the flour of love

زرعت هواه في جريب مثلث

I planted his love in a triangular field

خر غراب البين من حالق

The raven of separation flew from my bosom

يا نورة الهجر حلقت الصفا

O light of estrangement, the rocks of Al-Safa flew

اصبح قلبي بربخا للهوى

My heart has become a playground for love's folly,

بخدي من قطر الدموع ندوب

My cheeks bear the scars of tears' drops

يا شبيه الفالوذ في حمرة الخد

O you who are like apricot in the redness of cheeks, and like almond soothing thirsty souls,

قد أمات الهجران صبيان قلبي

Separation has killed the youths of my heart,

بدا حين أثرى باخوانه

He excelled when he enriched his brothers,

لو كنت لا أهدي إلى أن أرى

If I had naught to give but to behold

قد أمات الهجران صبيان قلبي

Separation has slain the youths of my heart,

أترجو أن تكون وأنت شيخ

Do you hope when old to be as you were

لئن قدمت قبلي رجال فطالما

Though you went before me with men, long have I walked

شرب الوصل دستج الهجر فاستطلق

The union drank separation's cup till overflowed

فتقت بالهجر دروز الهوى

The pearls of love scattered when separation's needle pricked me,

وعهدي به والله يصلح أمره

And I entrust him to Allah, who will make his matter right,

لا تراني وإن تطاولت عمدا

You cannot see me though you crane your neck

يكون الخال في وجه مليح

وكانوا لنا أصدقاء مضوا

وعويص من الأمور بهيم

بدا حين أثرى باخوانه

أرى للكأس حقا لا أراه

كفى أدبا لنفسك ما تراه

فأكثرت حسادي وأكثرت خلتي

نسب الجماز مقصور

إن يهدم الصد من جسمي معالفه

شربت بكأس الهوى نبذة معا
