ابن رازكه

حمدا لمالكنا لفظا ومستطرا

Praise be to our Master outwardly and inwardly

حمدنا الله ذا العرش المجيد

We praise Allah, the Lord of the glorious throne

هو الأجل الموقوت لا يتخلف

It is the appointed time that does not fail

أتيجرت هذا النيل بالله خبري

This Nile, I ask by Allah, tell me -

مصادر خمس قد أتت بفعول

Five sources have brought about deeds

دع العيس والبيداء تذرعها شطحا

Leave the barren wasteland covered in herbage,

سقى دمن الحي الحيا المتفائض

The lively life waterer waters the lively

يتفيهق الغمر المغمر مسهبا

The overwhelming tide pours forth profusely

فالأولياء رحمة للخلق

The saints are a mercy for all creation

أرق ماء الحياة لأجل جلى

Stay awake to irrigate life for your clan

أقول لصاحبي لما ارتحلنا

I say to my friend, when we depart

أتيناك نوكى مرملين فواسنا

We came to you troubled, our swords dripping

هذا جواب غامض في كلمتي

This is an ambiguous answer in my two words

تبجحت عند الموت والموت بغيتي

I boasted when facing death, and death is my wish,

غرام سقى قلبي مدامته صرفا

Love has watered my heart with its wine, continuously

إذا جلت فكرا في العلوم عويصها

When I exert my mind on science’s abstruse ways,

ألا أني خليلك يا حويرى

O Houreyrah, I am your friend

أثار الهوى سجع الحمام المغرد

The cooing of the melodious doves aroused passion's longings in my heart,

هو الموت عضب لا تخون مضاربه

Death is wrath whose blows do not betray,

شيوخ البيان الذائقين حلاوة

The eloquent scholars who have savored

سلم على شيخ النحاة وقل له

أحداج تلك الجمال

إلى الله أشكو طوع نفسي للهوى

يا عاصمي يا سالمي يا قاسمي

تخافقت البروق على الغميم
