تداركت سعدا عنوة فأخذته

You pursued Sa'd insistently and seized him

أقول له والرمح بيني وبينه

I say to him, with a spear between me and him,

لهاشم وزهير فرع مكرمة

A noble branch of Hashim and Zuhair

دعوت إلى خطة خالدا

I called for an immortal plan

ألم تر أن الدهر يلعب بالفتى

Have you not seen how time plays with the youth

لما أتت من بين كعب مزينة

When she came from between adorned heels

ما ضمن الحجر ممن قد مضى أحد

None buried in stone before our time

أيجزع كعب لأشياعه

Does Ka'b grieve for his comrades,

ولما لقيناهم بهندف جمعهم

When we met them in the valley with all their army

أنبيت أن غواة من بني حجر

I was told that raiders from Banu Hajar

ومشفقة تظن بنا الظنونا

Worried and full of doubts about us,

جزى الله عنا أم غيلان صالحا

May Allah reward Um Ghilan well

ويوم حبسنا قوم آذين جنده

And the day we confined the people who had wronged his soldiers

ونحن بنو الحرب العوان نشنها

We are the sons of war, lend it aid, and wage it,

يا نبي الهدى إليك لجا حي

O prophet of guidance, the living tribe of Quraysh came to you for refuge,

نفرت قلوصي من حجارة حرة

My arteries shivered from the burning rocks

ألا من لعين باتت الليل لم تنم

O one whose eyes stayed awake all night

ما بال عينك قد أزرى بها السهد

What ails your eyes that sadness has afflicted them

مهلا بني عمنا ظلامتنا

Slow down, son of our uncle, our darkness

إذا اتصلت تدعو أباها لحارث

ألمت خناس وإلمامها

أبلغ أبا بكر إذا ما لقيته

عين فابكي لعقبة بن أبان

عجبت لفخر الأوس والحين دائر

ألم تسأل الناس عن شأننا

القوم أعلم لولا مقدمي فرسي

أرى ابني لؤي أوشكا أن يسالما

فما السحاب غداة الحر من أحد
