جعفي جيرانها فقد عطرت

The jujube tree's neighbors have been perfumed

دست سعاد رسولا غير متهم

Su'ad sneaked in an innocent messenger,

أراني ولا كفران لله راجعا

I return, in spite of myself, with hidden yearning

ثفوا ثفوا باسم إلهي الذي

Seek refuge, seek refuge in the name of my God

أليس الزمان كما قد علمت

Is not time as you have known

ترى الرجل النحيف فتزدريه

You see a slender man, so you spurn him,

لمن ضوء نار قابلت أعين الركب

Who is it for whom the light of a fire welcomed the eyes of the caravan

وتزعم أني قد تبدلت خلة

You claim that I have changed my love for another

يا غنم ردي فؤاد الهائم الكمد

O flock, return the heart of the lovelorn pine

أنا للرحمن عاصي

I disobey the Most Merciful

لست أدري أعزمه الدهر أمضى

I know not whether fate has spent its shafts,

أعثمة اطلقي العلق الرهينا

A'thamah, let the captive bird go free

حبذا الرقة دارا وبلد

Grace made this land a home, a country

من لعين رأت خيالا مطيفا

Whoever saw an apparition gently standing

يا أمير المؤمنين اللاه

O Commander of the Faithful

معن يا معن يا ابن زائدة الكل

Ma'n, O Ma'n, O son of Za'ida the unwise,

حمامة بلغي عني سلاما

O dove, convey my greetings

بكى أهل مصر بالدموع السواجم

The people of Egypt cried with flowing tears

هززتك هزة السيف المحلى

I brandished you like a gilded sword,

يزيد الأزد إن يزيد قومي

صاح إني غير صاحي

إعتاد قلبك من حبيبك عيده

خليلي هذا ربع ليلى فقيدا

وبلائي أن أمي

قد بسط المهدي الندى

إذا المرء لم يطلب معاشا لنفسه
