أبو جلدة اليشكري

أحب على لذاذتنا شقيقا

I love a brother for his sweetness

لعمرك إني يوم أسند حاجتي

For your life if I one day lean my need

إن في القصر ذي الخبا بدر تم

In the palace of splendor is a full moon

يسعى أناس لكيما يدركوك ولو

People strive so that they may reach you even if

إذا نلت مالا قلت قيس عشيرتي

If you acquired wealth, you said Qais and my tribe

يهددني القعقاع في غير كنهه

The croaker threatens me though I know not his essence,

أبي لي أن ألحى نديمي إذا انتشى

I refuse to rebuke my drunken boon companion

أقول للنفس تأساء وتعزية

I say to my soul in consolation and comfort

ألا رب يوم لي ببست وليلة

Oh! Many a day with pleasure do I spice

قرى ضيفه الماء القراح ابن مسمع

The son of Masma' hosted his guest with little water in Al-Qurah

ولما رأيت سراة قومي

When I saw my people's caravan

يا يوم بؤس طلعت شمسه

O day of misery, your sun has risen

صاحبت عمرا زمانا ثم قلت له

For long years we were companions, then I said:

إذا اعتكرت ظلماء ليل ونومت

When the darkness of night grows murky,

ستعلم أن رأيك رأي سوء

You will know your opinion is wrong

لا تهج يشكر يا زياد ولا تكن

Do not complain, O Ziyad, and do not

أبا خالد ركني ومن أنا عبده

O Abu Khalid support me, I who am your servant

قل لذوي سيف وسيف ألستم

Say to those with swords and sword, are you not

أيا لهفي ويا حزني جميعا

Oh my yearning, oh my sadness altogether

هددني جهلا رقاش وليتني

Ignorantly, Raqash threatened me - would that

لما خطبت إلى خليعة نفسها

When I proposed to an unchaste soul

أمن ضرطة بالخيزران ضرطتها

With a fart I startled the reeds

صحا قلبي واقصر بعد غي

My heart is now serene, after long ignorance

لعمري لأهل الشام أطعن بالقنا

By my life! The people of Damascus thrust with spears,

وكأس كأن المسك فيها حسوتها

A cup, as if musk is in it, I sensed its fragrance

قبحت لو كنت أمرء صالحا

You would have disgraced yourself had you been an honest man

بانت سعاد وأمس حبلها انقطعا
