1. You would have disgraced yourself had you been an honest man
You would have known right from wrong
١. قَبَحتَ لو كنت أمرءً صالحاً
تعرف ما الحق من الباطلِ
2. You would have stopped insulting me without malice
And not implicated the innocent
٢. كفَفتَ عن شتمي بلا إخنهٍ
ولم تورَّط كِفَّةً الحابلِ
3. But your soul refused to heed the prohibition
Of determination, excellence, and success
٣. لكن أبت نفسك فعلَ النهى
والحزم والنجدةِ والنائلِ
4. You opened the door of insult upon me until
The hidden wickedness in you was exposed
٤. فتحتَ لي بالشتم حتى بدا
مكنون غِشٍ في الحشا داخلِ
5. So strive and say, do not leave a sincere man
Who insults a wise and capable man
٥. فاجهد وقُل لا تترك جاهداً
شَتم امريء ذي نجدةٍ عاقلِ
6. You blame me in a lofty café
An antidote brought from Babylon
٦. تعذلني في قهوةٍ مُزَّةٍ
درياقةٍ تُجلَب من بابلِ
7. If he had seen it, he would have fallen in love
And bowed to Satan in vain
٧. ولو رآها خرَّ من حُبّها
يسجُد للشيطان بالباطلِ
8. O evil of dawn whose beginning is all evil
And the pilfering of the glutton
٨. يا شرّ بكرٍ كلّها محتِدأ
ونُهزةَ المختلسِ الآكلِ
9. Leave your honor and flee, and leave me be
O fool, with what I love, for it is fleeting
٩. عِرضَك وفرّه ودعني وما
أهواه يا أحمق من باقلِ
