مثل نجوم السماء إن أفلت

Like the stars in the sky, if some disappear

يابن الخلائف ما لي بعد تقربة

O son of caliphs, I have no more means of access to you

فأنت غيثهم نفعا وطودهم

You are their rain, beneficial,

وأشعث طلاع الثنايا مبارك

With disheveled locks, scanning the folds of the valleys, blessed is he

تخل بحاجتي واشدد قواها

Forsake my need, make it more intense

لا قصرا عنها ولا بلغتها

Neither shortened of it nor conveyed to her

دع بعض أكلك رب آكل أكلة

Leave some of your food, many an eater of food

غبس خنابس كلهن مصدر

Gloomy are all the gentlewomen with lowered eyes

إذا كنت عيابا على الناس فاحترس

If you fault others, take care

ذهب الشباب وصرت كالخلق الذي

Youth has departed and I became like one

ولاة حماة يحسم الله ذو القوى

Protectors, guardians - God, the Mighty, will decide

قصدتك عاريا من كل قن

I approached you bare of any artefact

جواد إذا جئته راجيا

A generous one, if you come to him seeking,

إني عجبت لصوت غيث مرسل

I am amazed at the sound of pouring rain

لو يرسل الأزل الظباء

If fate let loose the gazelles wandering,

عليه فضفاضة الأردان ضافية

Upon him the looseness of the robes flowing,

فغادرتها رمادة حمما

So I left it as ashes and embers

بأي الخلتين عليك أثنني

With which of the two companions shall I praise you,

قنا لم يضرها في الكريهة عندما

A spear that you did not harm in the battle when

ما كنت أحسب أن بحرا زاخرا

I did not expect that an abundant sea

تكاد تخرج من أنساعها مرحا

She nearly bursts from her reins in rapture

أمست تصفقها الجنوب وأصبحت

The South began to applaud her, and she became

أقفر ممن يحله السند

Abandoned by those it once embraced

أصلحتني بالجود بل أفسدتني

You corrected me with kindness, but rather you corrupted me

نامت خلاخلها وجال وشاحها

Her anklets jingled as she walked, her sash flowing over the dune.

فلله عينا من رأى قط حادثا

So glory to Him whose eyes have seen

وإذا جلست مع الندى فلا تصل

And if you sit with companions, do not

تقول والعيس قد شدت بأرحلها

She said, while the caravan was loaded

فإليك ارتحلت تشفع لي قربي

To you I have come pleading, grant favor

ما مسبل زجل البعوض أنيسه

The buzzing of mosquitoes does not trouble their companion,

كالبيض بالأدحي يلمع في الضحى

Like pearls with the Milky Way shining at dawn

أنت ابن مسلنطح البطاح ولم

You are the son of Muslantah Al-Bitah, and

لا تأمنن امرأ أسكنت مهجته

Do not trust a woman whose heart you've grieved

يا صلت إن أباك رهن منية

O ties of kinship, your father is hostage to mortality

حل المشيب ففرق الرأس مشتعل

Gray hair has come and split my head aflame

نام الخلي من الهموم وبات لي

The Khalid forgot his worries and spent the night happily,

سعيت ابتغاء الشكر فيما صنعت لي

I sought to give thanks for what you did for me,

والمال جنة ذي المعايب إن يصب

Wealth is an orchard of one with faults; if it comes his way,

واعتام كهلك من ثقيف كفأه

حلاك خاتمها ومنبر ملكها

فيجلب من جيش شآم بغارة

فوالله ما أدري إذا جاء سائل

به دخيل هوى ضمر إذا ذكرت

فعليك تقوى الله واجعل أمرها

وترى المشيب مبصرا ومحكما

بات الخيال من الصليت مؤرقي
