- أحبتنا قد سرنى منكم الشرطOur beloved ones, your condition has indeed delighted me,
- أحبتنا ماذا الجفا والتشرطOur loved ones, why the estrangement and conditioning?
- إذا كنت عن تدبير حالك عاجزاIf you are incapable of managing your affairs,
- إذا لم يكن صدر المجالس سيداIf the man at the head of gatherings is not a noble lord,
- إذا لم يكن عقل الفتى عاقلا لهIf a young man's reason does not hold him fast
- أراك على نهج البطالة ساعياI see you striving along the path of idleness.
- أرائعة المشيب لقد أرعتيO terror of gray hair, you have indeed frightened
- أشاقك من أفق العراق لوامعI longed for you from Iraq's bright horizon,
- أطالب نفسى كل يوم وليلةI demand of myself each day and night
- أعاذك الله يا ذا المجد والأدبMay God protect you, O man of glory and refinement,
- أقول وأغصان الشباب وريقةI say, while the branches of youth are leafy,
- أقول وما لعلي أن أقولاI speak, though perhaps I should not speak:
- ألا مرحبا يا من ألم فراعاAh, welcome, you who came and awed
- ألا يا أيها الوامقListen, O loving one,
- أنسيا تجنبت الهوى أم تناسياDid you shun love through forgetfulness, or through feigned forgetting?
- أهيل الهوى من لي إليكم مبلغاO dear folk of love, who will convey to you on my behalf
- أيا من غدا قطبا لدائرة الفضلO you who have become the pivot of the circle of excellence,
- بأبي آس عذار وقفاMay my father be ransom for the myrtle of cheek-down that stood
- تذكرت من أهوى وبين نواظريI remembered those I love, while before my eyes
- تعشقت أحوى أسمر اللون عينهI fell in love with a dusky, brown-skinned one, whose eye
- تمنى رجال كاف كيس وبعضهمMen wished for the kāf of kīs (‘purse’), and some of them
- توهمت قدما ان ليلى تبرقعتI once imagined that Layla had veiled her face
- خليلى انى في الغرام أسيرMy two friends, I am a captive of love.
- صبرت وكان الصبر مني سجيةI was patient, and patience was my nature,
- صواب لقلبى فى أساك يصابIt is fitting that my heart be stricken by your sorrow.
- عاذلي أنت خال من مصابيMy reproacher, you are untouched by my affliction,
- عجبت له إذ زار في النوم مضجعيI marveled at him when he visited my bed in sleep,
- على الدهر لى عتب فهل هو زائلهI bear a grievance against Time—will it dispel it?
- فراقي لكم أفنى التصبر عنكمMy separation from you has exhausted my patient endurance in your absence.
- فلب الحزم إن حاولت يوماSo heed resolve if ever you try;
- فلسان حالى لم يزل لى شاهداFor the tongue of my state has never ceased to bear witness for me,
- فؤاد ببحر الوجد طاف وعائمA heart afloat and swimming in the sea of longing,
- قضاء قد جرى فعليه صبراA decree has run its course; bear it, then, with patience,
- قضاء محكم لا يستطاعAn irrevocable decree that cannot
- كرروا البشرى مرة بعد مرةRepeat the glad tidings, time after time,
- كل يوم أريد أن أتحلىEvery day I wish to adorn myself
- لقد بت فى وجد من القرب والبعدIndeed, I spent the night in longing born of nearness and distance,
- لك الخير إني لا أعيد ولا أبدىMay goodness be yours; I can neither repeat nor begin to speak,
- لك الخير فامدد كف جودك بالبذلMay good be yours; so stretch out your generous palm in giving,
- متى رمضان ينقضى بسلامWhen will Ramadan come to an end in peace,
- محب أتى والشوق يحدو فؤادهA lover came, longing urging his heart onward
- منيتي مذ رام هجريMy heart's desire, since he sought to forsake me,
- هكذا المجد طارف وتليدSuch is glory—newly won and inherited:
- هل أنت ممن للعواذل يسمعAre you one who listens to reproachers,
- ويوم قطفنا كل زهر للذةAnd one day we plucked every flower for pleasure,
- يا سعد بلغ إن وصلت إليهموO Sa'd, if you reach them, convey
