وعمدا أضعت العمر أم كنت ساهيا
Did you shun love through forgetfulness, or through feigned forgetting?
Did I forget love or did I neglect it
And did you waste your life deliberately, or were you heedless?
And deliberately waste my youth or was I oblivious

By your life, nature, the soul, and youth
By your life, nature, the soul, and youth
have a claim upon you; so be faithful in fulfilling it.
Have a right over you, so be faithful to them

Are you not the gentlest of people by nature, and do you see
Are you not the most gentle in nature? Do you see
anyone of tender disposition who does not share the cup?
A gentle nature except being sociable?

Your youth—the devotions of dalliance are a duty
Your youth's obedience is an obligation
upon it; what folly, then, to cast off dalliance!
So it is ignorance to avoid obedience

So share the cups of revelry with the moons of its horizon,
Drink cups of indulgence, moons of its horizon
and be a sipper of conviviality's wine, O friend.
And be embracing humanity, oh lively companion

Do you not see your branch of youth putting forth leaves,
Do you not see the branch of youth from you leafing
and love's turtledove calling to you from above it,
And the moon of passion calling you from above?

They come to the meadow of union if you were a water-bearer

So renew—may my soul be your ransom—the festivals of youthful longing,
So renew, your soul's festivals of youth
and ascend above the sanctuary of delights.
And be above the altar of joy an elevator

ولن يحتس اللذات من كان جافيا
For no helpless man will pluck the blossoms of delight,
For no rose of joy withers from inability
nor will one who is unfeeling sip pleasures.
And no pleasures are tasted by one who is dry

And take the initiative as life is a playground of pleasure
and youth's horses gallop within it.
And the steeds of youth in it become accustomed

For no good lies in a young man's living and his life,
For there is no good in the life of a young man
if he does not treat beautiful women tenderly in love.
If he does not flirt with loves in coyness

Long have I loosened in the arena of love
the reins of the soul's steed, openly and in secret.
The rein of the soul's steed openly and secretly

So say to him who has turned apostate from revelry,
So say to one who became devout about indulgence
and now journeys through the night of ostentation:
And spent the night of disapproval lasting

Be arrogant, grow in conceit, and be confident
Be arrogant and increase wonder and be yourself certain
in your acts of obedience, through which you were disobedient.
With your devotions which you were with disobedient

But as for the sons of letters, God is a refuge
And as for the people of manners, for them is God
for them, rather than acts of obedience that are sins.
Without devotions that would be disobedient
