قضاء قد جرى فعليه صبرا

قضاء قد جرى فعليه صبرا

وان كانت به العبرات تترى

A decree has run its course; bear it, then, with patience,

A decree has come to pass, so bear it patiently,

though tears for it come one after another.

Even though tears over it fall one after another.

وخطب قد ألم فصرت منه

أرى طعم الحياة لدى مرا

أرى طعم الحياة لدى مرا

A grievous blow has struck, and through it I have come

And a calamity has struck, leaving me

to find the taste of life bitter to me.

مصاب جل حتى فاض دمعى

مصاب جل حتى فاض دمعى

دما وتفجرت أحشاى جمرا

دما وتفجرت أحشاى جمرا

A loss so vast that my tears overflowed

A loss so grievous that my tears overflowed

as blood, while my entrails erupted into embers.

As blood, and my entrails burst into embers.

مضى عيسى الخليفة بعدما قد

مضى عيسى الخليفة بعدما قد

به الدنيا ازدهت شرفا وفخرا

به الدنيا ازدهت شرفا وفخرا

Isa Al Khalifa has passed away, after

Isa al-Khalifa passed away, after

the world through him had shone with honor and pride.

The world had flourished through him in honor and pride.

وعم الناس بالافضال جودا

وعم الناس بالافضال جودا

وفاق الناس اجلالا وقدرا

وفاق الناس اجلالا وقدرا

His bounty embraced all people with favors,

And he generously bestowed favors upon all people,

and he surpassed all people in majesty and worth.

And surpassed all people in esteem and rank.

فيا من بالمروءة قد تحلى

فيا من بالمروءة قد تحلى

ويا من بالمكارم كان بدرا

ويا من بالمكارم كان بدرا

O you who adorned yourself with manly virtue,

So, O you who adorned yourself with chivalry,

O you who among noble qualities were a full moon,

And O you who were a full moon in noble virtue,

حباك الله ملكا فى شباب

حباك الله ملكا فى شباب

به ابتسمت ثغور المجد بشرى

به ابتسمت ثغور المجد بشرى

God bestowed kingship upon you in your youth;

God granted you sovereignty in youth,

through it, the lips of glory smiled with glad tidings.

Through it, the mouths of glory smiled with glad tidings.

وحفتك العناية من اله

وحفتك العناية من اله

أقامك للورى كنفا وذخرا

أقامك للورى كنفا وذخرا

Providential care from God surrounded you;

And you were enfolded in providence from God,

He made you a treasure and a reserve for humankind.

Who made you a shelter and a treasure for humankind.

فقمت بما حملت مقام حر

فقمت بما حملت مقام حر

رأى فيك الورى شيخا أبرا

رأى فيك الورى شيخا أبرا

You discharged what you were entrusted with as a freeborn noble;

So you fulfilled your charge in the manner of a noble man;

the people saw in you a sheikh of surpassing righteousness,

Humankind saw in you a most benevolent sheikh,

ملاذا للارامل واليتامى

ملاذا للارامل واليتامى

وعونا للضعيف قرى وخيرا

وعونا للضعيف قرى وخيرا

a refuge for widows and orphans,

A refuge for widows and orphans,

a help to the weak, with hospitality and goodness,

And a help to the weak, with hospitality and goodness,

وغوثا للذى قد جاء يرجو

وغوثا للذى قد جاء يرجو

بما قد شاء احسانا وبرا

بما قد شاء احسانا وبرا

and a source of succor to whoever came in hope,

And succor for whoever came in hope,

granting whatever kindness and beneficence he sought.

With whatever kindness and benevolence he desired.

أجرت اللاجئين بما استحقوا

أجرت اللاجئين بما استحقوا

فكان لك الجزا حمدا وشكرا

فكان لك الجزا حمدا وشكرا

You sheltered those seeking refuge, as was their due,

You sheltered those seeking refuge as they deserved,

and your recompense was praise and gratitude.

So your reward was praise and thanks.

فأنت الغيث فى كرم وجود

فأنت الغيث فى كرم وجود

وأنت الليث لا بل أنت أجرا

وأنت الليث لا بل أنت أجرا

You are the raincloud itself in generosity and bounty,

For you are life-giving rain in generosity and bounty,

and you are the lion—no, bolder still.

And you are the lion—no, rather, you are bolder still.

حياتك كلها للناس خير

حياتك كلها للناس خير

وأمن شامل برا وبحرا

وأمن شامل برا وبحرا

Your entire life was goodness for the people,

Your whole life was a blessing to the people,

and all-embracing security, on land and sea.

And all-embracing security on land and sea.

ألفتك الفة ملكت فؤادى

ألفتك الفة ملكت فؤادى

فكيف لك الجزا حمدا وشكرا

فكيف لك الجزا حمدا وشكرا

I grew close to you—an intimacy that possessed my heart;

I grew attached to you with an affection that possessed my heart;

how, then, could praise and remembrance ever repay you?

How, then, can I repay you with praise and thanks?

وكيف الصبر عنك وكل شيء

وكيف الصبر عنك وكل شيء

أراه مجددا لى عنك ذكرى

أراه مجددا لى عنك ذكرى

And how can I endure being parted from you, when everything

And how can I bear your absence, when everything

I see renews my remembrance of you?

I see renews a memory of you for me?

وكنت أرى الغنى اذ كنت حيا

وكنت أرى الغنى اذ كنت حيا

وها أنذا أخاف اليوم فقرا

وها أنذا أخاف اليوم فقرا

I counted myself rich while you were alive,

And I saw prosperity while you were alive,

and now here I am, fearing poverty.

And here I am today, fearing poverty.

وما خوفى على نفسى ولكن

وما خوفى على نفسى ولكن

على قومى أخاف عنا عسرا

على قومى أخاف عنا عسرا

Yet I do not fear for myself,

And my fear is not for myself, but

but for my people: I fear hardship will overtake us.

For my people I fear suffering and hardship.

وفى حمد لنا خلف عظيم

وفى حمد لنا خلف عظيم

وهل يرجى سوى حمد ويطرى

وهل يرجى سوى حمد ويطرى

Yet in Hamad we have a mighty successor;

And in Hamad we have a great successor;

and who but Hamad is hoped in and extolled?

And who but Hamad is looked to with hope and praised?

فيا حمد المكارم قد بناها

فيا حمد المكارم قد بناها

لنا سلف وأنت بذاك أدرى

لنا سلف وأنت بذاك أدرى

O Hamad, noble deeds were built

So, O Hamad, noble virtues were built up

for us by forebears, and you know that best.

For us by a forebear, and you know that best.

فهلتبنى لنا شرفا ومجدا

فهلتبنى لنا شرفا ومجدا

وتعلى فوق ذاك البرج قصرا

وتعلى فوق ذاك البرج قصرا

Will you, then, build honor and glory for us,

Will you, then, build honor and glory for us,

and raise above that tower a palace?

And raise a palace above that tower,

وتجمع شملنا وتكون فينا

وتجمع شملنا وتكون فينا

كعيسى مشفقا سرا وجهرا

كعيسى مشفقا سرا وجهرا

Will you gather our scattered whole and be among us,

And unite our community, and be among us

like Isa, compassionate in secret and in public?

Like Isa, compassionate in private and in public?

وأنت سليلة لا شك تجرى

وأنت سليلة لا شك تجرى

على آثاره في خير مجرى

على آثاره في خير مجرى

You are his descendant, and surely you proceed

And you are a scion, without doubt following

along his traces on the finest course.

In his footsteps, along the finest course.

أبوك أب لنا بر شفيق

أبوك أب لنا بر شفيق

وانك بعده بالبر أحرى

وانك بعده بالبر أحرى

Your father was to us a dutiful, compassionate father,

Your father was a father to us, kind and compassionate,

and after him, you are worthier still of such goodness.

And after him, you are all the more suited to doing good.

وانك والد من بعد عيسى

وانك والد من بعد عيسى

لآل خليفة تحنو وتدرا

لآل خليفة تحنو وتدرا

And after Isa, you alone

And you are indeed a father after Isa,

bend tenderly over the House of Khalifa and shield it.

To the House of Khalifa, whom you tenderly care for and defend.

فكن كأبيك فى دين ودنيا

فكن كأبيك فى دين ودنيا

تفز بالحمد فى دنيا وأخرى

تفز بالحمد فى دنيا وأخرى

So be like your father in faith and worldly life,

So be like your father in faith and worldly life;

and win praise in this world and the next.

You will win praise in this world and the next.
