I see you striving along the path of idleness.
I see you following the path of idleness,
Since when, my heart, have you strayed from sound judgment?
When have you, my heart, been misguided?

Did you not, my heart, once promise me
Are you not, my heart, the one who promised me before,
to cease pursuing amusement? Have you forgotten?
To abandon frivolity? Were you forgetful?
أعدrenew نظراconsideration ياO قلبheart واجتنبand avoid الهوىdesire
فانfor indeed الهوىdesire معناهits meaning كونكyour being هاوياfalling
Look again, O heart, and shun desire,
Reconsider, O heart, and avoid passion,
for desire means that you are falling.
For passion means you are fallen.

You fell in love with a gazelle and believed him virtuous;
You loved a gazelle and thought it virtuous,
since when, my heart, have you known the unseen?
When have you, my heart, known the unseen?

For, by God, I do not know whether you will be displeased
By Allah, I do not know if you will wake up angry,
at union with him, or whether you will be content.
At its connection, or wake up content.

And suppose his face pleases you with its beauty;
And if its beautiful face pleases you,
then will you find his nature pure, O heart?
Is its nature, O heart, really pure to you?

And now, my heart, you have called me to him;
And here you are, my heart, inviting me to it,
so beware of ever complaining to me about him,
Beware lest one day you complain about it.

and of laying blame, if some trait of his displeases you,
And if its manners displease you,
upon your well-known elder, since he was a guide.
Do not blame your wise old guide.

And if one day you attain what you have hoped for,
And if one day you attain what you hoped for,
then rejoice, my heart, in the one you have met.
Congratulations to you, my heart, for finding what you sought.

There life grows sweet for me, and I reap
There, life will be sweet for me and I will enjoy,
the fruits of joys, as I had hoped.
The fruits of joy that I hoped for.
علىnotwithstanding أنthat رباتthe ladies of الخدورsecluded chambers غوادرtreacherous
وحسبكand it suffices you يغدرنthey betray العشيرthe husband المصافياdevoted
Yet the ladies of secluded chambers are treacherous;
But the dwellers of tents are fickle,
and it is enough for you that they betray a devoted husband.
And it is enough that they betray the loyal.
فقدfor indeed خانتshe betrayed الحرثal-Harith بنson of عمروAmr هنيدةHunaydah
وكانand he was بهاtoward her براkind وصولاdevoted مواتياaccommodating
For Hunaydah betrayed al-Harith ibn Amr,
For Harith bin Imru al-Qays betrayed Hinid,
though he was kind to her, devoted, and accommodating.
Though she was righteous and faithful to him.
وقدand indeed غدرتshe acted treacherously بابنtoward the son of الرسولthe Messenger جعيدةJuʿaydah
وقدand indeed أطمعتshe was enticed يوماone day بماby what كانwas فانياfleeting
And Juʿaydah betrayed the Messenger's son,
And Ju'ayda betrayed the son of the Messenger,
having once been enticed by what was fleeting.
Though she once hoped for what was fleeting.
وكمand many a قدindeed وفتshe kept faith منهنamong them خودyoung woman لبعلهاto her husband
ألاah حبذاhow admirable منthe one who كانis منهنamong them وافياfaithful
And many a young woman among them has kept faith with her husband;
And how many of them have betrayed a loyal husband,
ah, how admirable is the one among them who is faithful!
If only there was one among them who was loyal!
