ضياء كمال فضلك لن يزولا

I speak, though perhaps I should not speak:

I say, though I need not say

The radiance of your perfect excellence will not fade.

Dhiya, your bounty will not fade away

فضلت أهيل عصرك في ذكاء

فضلت أهيل عصرك في ذكاء

وزدت فكنت للماضي دليلا

وزدت فكنت للماضي دليلا

You surpassed the folk of your age in intelligence,

You graced your time with intellect bright

And went further, becoming a guide to the past.

And to the past you were a guiding light

رددت على المعرى بعض قول

رددت على المعرى بعض قول

ومثلك من يكون بذا كفيلا

ومثلك من يكون بذا كفيلا

You rebutted part of a saying by al-Maʿarri,

You answered Al-Ma'arri in some words

And one like you is capable of this.

And who but you could bear such heavy swords

وقولى ربما للشيخ عذر

وقولى ربما للشيخ عذر

وفضلك يقتضى منك القبولا

وفضلك يقتضى منك القبولا

And I say: perhaps the sheikh has an excuse,

My words to the Shaykh might merit pardon

And your graciousness calls on you to accept it.

Your excellence calls for your acceptance and open arms

فلا عجب اذا قال المواشى

فلا عجب اذا قال المواشى

جميع ضروبها عدم العقولا

جميع ضروبها عدم العقولا

So no wonder if he said that livestock,

No wonder herds say in their speaks

Of every kind, lack reason.

That to them all, intellect nothing means

وفضل الله ليس به خفاء

وفضل الله ليس به خفاء

فكن يا قطب أنسى لى حمولا

فكن يا قطب أنسى لى حمولا

And God's bounty is not hidden;

God's grace does not stay concealed for long

So be forbearing with me, O pole of my solace.

So be, O Pole, a bosom friend warm
