It is fitting that my heart be stricken by your sorrow.

And my soul would suffer torment were it not stricken.

And my eye, should it not shed tears over

your affliction, O son of the noblest, would perish.

O Majid, grief has pressed hard upon me with anguish.

And my grief for the grief that has befallen you is fitting.

For if a person's grief could bring back what is lost,

an answer would come to you from what has caused harm.

So turn away from your sorrow, O son of my dear friend,

and tell sorrow, 'Let another, not me, be reproached on your account.'

For of all people, you are closest in kinship to firm resolve,

and the herald of sorrow fears a man of firm resolve.

And one like you has no need of me for counsel,

but my heart is stricken by your sorrow.
