رضاك شباب لا يليه مشيب

Your pleasure is a youth that knows no age

فكأنه في الماء صاحب مذهب

As if in water, a companion of doctrine

بات يسقيني ويشرب

He gives me drink and drinks

وأشجار نارنج كأن ثمارها

And orange trees, as if their fruit

إذا نامت العينان من متيقظ

If the eyes of the vigilant man fall asleep

كأن نجوم الليل في ظلماته

As if the stars of night in its darkness

إذا لاح في أغصانه فكأنه

When it gleams on its branches, it is as if

وفتية من حميرٍ حمرِ الظبى

Roses of hope in gardens of glory

باتت تئن وما بها وجدي

She moans though nothing ails her

وأقحوان كأن وردته

Roses as though its buds

اسقني واسقِ صاحبي

With clouds' tears blended

فما شككت وقد جاء البشير به

When the herald brought the news to me

لم لا تجن بها القلوب

Why don't hearts become attracted to it

ورعدة كقارئ متعتع

Like thunder rumbling, a stuttering reader,

أسير وقلبي في ذراك أسير

I wander, while my heart wanders in your valleys

وجاء لا جاء الدجى كأنه

And night came, it came not as it usually does

لم أنس دجلة والدجى متصوب

I have not forgotten the Tigris at night aiming

كأن ارتجاس الريح في جنباتها

Roar of the wind in its sides

وليلة مثل أمرِ الساعة اشتبهت

A night like the matter of the hour was confused

أو ليس من احدى العجائب أنني

Roses are red, violets are blue

إذا بان محبوب وعاش محبه

يا واحد الناس لا مستثنيا أحدا

O you who are unique among people, none excluded

ومن خرم غض خلال شقائق

From soft, tender cheeks, between anemones

انظر اليها والنسر منحدر

Look at her, the eagle swoops down

أتانا نبقك الحاكي

Roses and coral you brought me

والارض من صبغ النبات كأنما

The earth with vegetation's dye as though

وجمر كتصحيف اسمه في كؤوسه

And embers like pages with his name on the wine cups

خذها اليك من الغزال الاحور

Take it from the most beautiful gazelle

أما في جنايات النواظر ناظر

In the crimes of glances, I am but a witness,

وآذريون مثل خد متيم

Like Mutayyam's devoted servant, whose heart

وقفنا نجيل الرأي في ساكني الغضا

We stood revealing thoughts to dwellers in the meadow,

وافى كتابك مثلما

Your book arrived like a harbinger

إلق العدو بوجه لا قطوب به

The enemy met with an unwavering face

وليلة كأنها طول الأمل

A night that seems as long as hope

رأيت في الحمام بدر الدجى

I saw the full moon of nightfall in the bathhouse

قلت يوماً لمن تمنطق بالزنار

I once said to the one with a slender waist,

رياض اذريون لاح مبتسما

The garden smiled, radiant,

لولا انتهائي لم أطع نهي النهى

Had I not been finite, I would not have obeyed the prohibition of prohibitions

رب ليل قطعته بصدود

Many a night I spent awake, separated

وكأنما شرك المجرة بينها

As if the stars' connection was like

خذ الفلس من كف اللئيم فانه

Take the coin from the palm of the ignoble one, for it

كغصن ثنته الريح عند اعتداله

Like a branch bent by the wind in its prime

أسامره والليل أسود أورق

His night is pitch black, dawn reveals

وليلة ترك البرد البلاد بها

And on a night when the cold left the land

عبثت به الحمى فورد وجهه

Fever toyed with him and flushed his face,

كتبت وليلي بالسهاد نهار

I wrote while my night was awake and daytime slept,

ولحد حوى شمسا وأرض تضمنت

Each one possessed a sun and land that harbored

مرابع لو كن المرابع أنجما

If dwellings were stars

حور بعينيه أطال تحيري

Eyes whose gazes lengthened my bewilderment

لله أيام مضين قطعتها

Days passed by for God, and I spent them

كأن بني نعش نساء حواسر

As if around a bier women mourners wail

بأبي وجهك لو أش

By your face though you mask

ويوم كأن الشمس من تحت غيمه

And a day when the sun beneath its clouds

الرفق يمن وخير القول أصدقه

Kindness is a blessing, and truth is the best of words,

كأنما نجومها

As if its stars

لم أنس شمس الضحى تطالعني

I have not forgotten the morning sun shining upon me

كأن اسوداد الافق بالليل ثاكل

As if the darkening of the horizon at night is a mourner

قلقل ركابك للفلا

Rattle your stirrups towards the meadow

ورياض حاكت لهن الثريا

Gardens woven for them by the soft rain,

تخير إذا ما كنت في الأمر مرسلا

When you are sending a man on a mission

قالوا عشقت عظيم الجسم قلت لهم

They said you love one enormous in body, I said to them:

رياض من النارنج كالأمن والمنى

Gardens of orange trees like security and wishes fulfilled

أما ترى البرد قد وافت عساكره

Behold the frost has marched its armies forth,

ويوم كأن الشمس من فرط برده

On a day when the sun was so cold

كأن النجوم الزهر في غلس الدجى

The stars are blossoms in the dusk's chalice

يفديه من نوب الزمان معاشر

He has been rescued from the vicissitudes of time by companions

لبست نحافة الغصن النحيف

I donned the slenderness of the thin branch,

سحاب أتى كالأمن بعد تخوف

Clouds came like safety after apprehension

يحدو بها الرعد فإن كلت زجر

The thunder rumbles with it, and if it roars he rebukes

فحم كيوم الفراق تشعله

ما منهم إلا امرؤ غمر الندى

ببرق كأشجاني وقطر كأدمعي

كأن الدجى لما استنارت نجومه

يجود فيستحيي الحيا عند جوده

وليلة مشتاق كأن نجومها

من ابن رسول الله وابن وصيه

كأنه فوق يدي حامله

زينها بنفسج كأنه

خرجنا لنستسقي بيمنِ دعائه

كأنما المريخ والمشتري

مغاني تصاب جمعت فرق الصبا

أحبب الي بنهر معقل الذي

في موقف وقف الحمام ولم يزغ

واصفر الجو قد لاحت كواكبه

عهدي بها وضياء الصبح يطفئها

وراح من الشمس مخلوقة

كتبت أدام الله عزك سالما

قلت لأصحابي وقد مر بي

وقصيدة الفاظها

ثوى الفقه في قعر الثرى مذ ثوى به

فديت عينيك وإن كانتا

طرب الشقائق للحمام وقد شدا
