1. Fever toyed with him and flushed his face,
The fever raged and the sick burned,

2. The measles emerged and he was like a pearl
Laid out on red agate in rows,

3. And it came upon him scattering like a little sparrow
Sprinkled with sprinkles on white silk.

4. Now it resembled the moon when it resembled for us
Dewdrops falling on places of beauty,

5. So it was as if the pages of the scripture adorned him,
Dots and lines amid verses.
