العجير السلولي

عرجت فيها سراة اليوم أسألها

I roamed its valleys today and asked of them,

ويوم ادركنا يوم دارة خنزر

The day we reached the abode of Khinzir

ألم تعلمي بالحي سفلى ديارهم

Did you not know the dwellings of the tribe

يبين الجار حين يبين عني

My neighbor shuns me when he shuns me

إليك سبقنا السوط والسجن تحتنا

To you we raced, though whips and jails beneath us lay

أيا رب لا تغفر لعثمة ذنبها

O Lord, do not forgive Uthma's sin

ولا تجعلي ضيفي ضيف مقرب

Do not make my guest an intimate one

ودليت دلوي في دلاء كثيرة

I poured my bucket in many wells

إذا ما مشت نادى بما في ثيابها

When she walks, her clothes proclaim her coming

لما أتينا ساحة الحي وانبرى

When we came to the square of the district and it bustled

أمن أجل شاة بتما بقذاله

For the sake of a ewe with a spotted backside

ولما رأت أن حال بيني وبينها

When she saw that enemies and villains from the neighborhood

سأغلب والسماء ومن بناها

I will overcome, and the sky and He who built it

وإذا تعرقت الجلائف مالنا

When our saddle-bags perspire

وما الدهر إلا تارتان فمنهما

The days are but two breaths

فما كيس في الناس يحمد رأيه

No cunning man is praised for his counsel

أتيتك إن الباهلي يسوقني

My younger days when debts would accrue

نهارك ما فيه ليان ولا قرى

Your day has no night or villages

أمن أهل الأراك هوى نزيع

Is he of the people of the thicket a yearning friend

ولقد وضعتك غير مترك

I placed you not as one abandoned,

لا نوم إلا غرار العين ساهرة

No sleep but trickery of wakeful eyes

لقد آذنت بالهجر هيفاء ليتها

Indeed she has intimated the separation tenderly,

تركنا أبا الأضياف في ليلة الصبا

We left the generous host on a youthful night

فعد صاحب اللحام سيفا تبيعه

Offer your sword-seller friend a sword to sell

ما هاج عينك أَم قد كاد يبكيها

What has inflamed your eyes, or have they almost wept

تقول وقد غالبتها أم خالد

Umm Khaled says when she had overcome him:

ومنخرق عن منكبيه قميصه

His shirt torn at the shoulders,

أقول لعبد الله وهنا ودوننا

I say to Abdullah here and nearby

ألا تلك أم الهبرزي تبينت

Alas! That old woman Umm Al-Hibreezi has clearly seen

وما لبس الناس من حلة

People wear no garment new,

أبلغ كليبا بأن الفج بين صدى

تجوب الدجا سكاء من دون فرخها

فباتت هموم الصدر شتى يعدنه

خليلي عوجا أسعفاني وحييا

سمين المطايا يشرب السور والحسا

عفا يافع من أهله فطلوب

إذا ما أتيت الخاضبات أكفها

فما صقر حجاج بن يوسف ممسكا

إذا البيضة الصماء عضت صفيحة

يا ليتني يوم حزمت القلوص له

حم الذرى مرسلة منه العرى

هاتيك جمل بأرض لا يقربها

وإن ابن عمي لابن زيد وإنه

من المهديات الماء بعدما

ألا هل لبعجان الهلالي زاجر

خليلي حلا واتركا الرحل إنني

ولم يحذل العين مثل الفراق

لا تقربن مقالة مشهورة

يسعى أناس ويشقى آخرون بهم

تكنّفني الواشون من كل جانب
