خضبتني الأيام لون بياض

The days have dyed me the color of whiteness,

فسا الشيخ سهوا وفي كفه

The old man made a mistake unwittingly,

مات أبو سهل فواحسرتا

Alas, Abu Sahl died, what sorrow!

غريب على الأيام وجدان مثله

Stranger to his times, none is like him,

رأيتك إن أيسرت خيمت عندنا

If you come by this way, stay here awhile

شموس لهن الخدر والبدر مغرب

Suns whose rising and setting brought torment,

وأرثي له من موقف السوء عنده

I eulogize him from his stance of evil with him

هلم الخطا بدر الدجنة وارفقا

Come slowly, O light of the evening star, be gentle

ومن نصر التوحيد والعدل فعله

He who upholds divine oneness and justice through his deeds

مقابل بين اقوام وألوية

A gatherer of peoples and banners

أبو سعيد زحل للكرام

Abu Saeed is a calamity for the noble ones,

لاحت لوجهي أنجم

Stars shone on my face

ومتى شتمت الدهر تشتم صابرا

When you blame fate, you blame one resigned,

الملك عندي متعة الشباب

The king in my view is the pleasure of youth

لا تغترر بالحليم تغضبه

Do not be deceived by the forbearing when you provoke him,

يبكي من الموت أبو طيب

Abu Tayyib weeps for death,

يا عضد الدولة من يمناها

O pillar of the state, he who guides it,

وقينة أحسن من لقياها

More faithful than her meeting is the thought of her

هذا أبو بكر صقلت حسامه

This is Abu Bakr, I sharpened his sword

أيدري السيف أي فتى يبيد

The sword, I wonder which youth it destroys,

ولي والله إخوان كثير

I do have, by God, many brothers,

لا يصغر الرجل الكبير

The great man is not belittled

خليلي عهدي بالليالي صوافيا

My friend, my pact with the nights was unfailing,

ختمت بك العجم الملوك وراجعت

With you the Persian kings have reached their end, and

بحمدك لا بحمد الناس أضحي

With Your praise, not the people's praise, I rise

أكل بناءٍ أنت بانيه معجز

Every building you build is a wondrous miracle

حسد السماك سميه لما بدا

Envy named him Smoothie when he appeared

متى أشق رواق الملك تلحظني

When will I traverse the palace halls while

وكنت سماء والعجاج سحائبا

You were a sky, and your steeds clouds

كلم هي الأمثال إلا أنها

The proverbs are but words

لا تصحب الكسلان في حاجاته

Do not accompany the lazy in his affairs,

مضت الشبيبة والحبيبة فالتقى

Youth and my love have passed, so tears meet

ما لي رأيت بني العباس قد فتحوا

I am appalled that the Abbasids have paved

ألا أبلغ بني شار كلامي

Convey my words to the people of Shar,

وصفراء كالدينار بنت ثلاثة

Yellow like a gold coin, daughter of three lands

أخو كلمات ما جلاها لسانه

A brother of words, his tongue revealed them

أرى لك أفعالا تناقض أمرها

I see your actions contradict their nature

وكم ليلة لا أعلم الدهر طيبها

How many a night whereof I know not its delight

ولقد بلوت الأصدقاء فلم

I have tested friends, yet found

وهم جعلوني بين عبد وقينة

They placed me between a slave, a singing girl

يا ترجمان الليالي عن معاذرها

O interpreter of nights, plead their excuses,

لا تحمدن ابن عبار وإن هطلت

Do not praise the son of Ibn Abbar though his hands may rain

عذيري من ضحك غدا سبب البكا

My excuse is a laugh that became a reason for crying

ولقد ذكرتك والنجوم كأنها

I recalled you as the stars appeared

تأخر عن كتبي الجواب وإنما

The reply to my letters was delayed, yet

فإن ردني دهري عليك طريدة

If time returns me to you an outcast,

يا دهر إنك بالرجال بصير

O fate, you are wise about men,

وإذا ابتدهت بديهة يا سيدي

When I begin with wit, my lord

ألا حركا لي أبرويز بن هرمز

وغاظ مدحك أقواما وفي يدهم

فديتك ما بدالي قصد حر

وصاحب لي لو حلت رزيته

عذيري من تلك الوجوه التي غدت

يفل غدا جيش النوى عسكر اللقا

ولما اكثر الحساد فيه

شريف فعله فعل وضيع

يا طالبا روحي ليبتاعها

إن ذا البلعمي والعين غين

كتابي أبا نصر إليك وحالتي

مضت الشبيبة والحبيبة فالتقى دمعان

يا قاضيا ما مثله من قاض

وشمس ما بدت إلا أرتنا

قلت للعين حين شامت جمالا

بسمت فأبدت جيدها فتكشفت

قد عصاني دمعي وخلي فخلت الخل

لعمرك لولا آل بوية في الورى

طلقت بعدك مدح الناس كلهم

كتبت ابن عباد إليك وحالتي

ألست ترى السيف كيف انثلم

مجبر صير ابنه ناصبيا

يا أيها الخاطب مدحي وهل
