I saw Haritha ibn Badr
بني نهشل إن الكبير يهيجه
Over hill and dale the great are stirred
خليلي لولا حب ميسة لم أبل
My friend, if not for the love of Maysa I would not have excelled
ألا أبلغ همدان ما لقيتها
Should I convey to Hamdan what befell me
لعمرك ما فارقت شماء عن قلي
By your life, the fragrance of Shamaa never parted from my heart
هو الشمس إلا أن للشمس غيبة

يبيت بطينا من لحوم صديقه
He sleeps with a belly full of his friend's flesh
لهفي عليك للهفة من خائف

لقد عجبت وكم للدهر من عجب
I'm amazed at how strange fate can be,
يعيب علي الراح من لو يذوقها
He blames me for drinking wine
غدا ناضحا لم يأل جهدا مخارق
In the morning, dazzling, sparing no effort
أمست ديار بني بدر معطلة
The dwellings of the people of Badr have become desolate
أراوية علي بنو سليط
O sons of Salit, avoid maligning people,
الصبر أجمل والدنيا مفجعة
Patience is most beautiful, though life brings much grief
إذا ما مت سر بني تميم
If the secret of Banu Tamim were to die
يا صاح إني لست ناسٍ ليلة
O friend, I do not forget a night
ألا آذنا شماء بالبين إنه
O fragrant breeze of separation, he
وما احتجب الألفان إلا بهين
The two friends have never hidden away
تبدلت من أنس إنه
The intimacy has changed, for he
يزم أبو بحر أمورا يريدها
Abu Bahr dictates affairs he wants
جزاك إله العرش خير جزائه
May God, Lord of the Throne, reward you greatly
سلم على الدار أقوت بعد آباد
Greet the abode though it lies desolate
وكم لائم لي في الشراب زجرته
How many blamers have I silenced when they scolded me for drinking,
استأن تظفر في أمورك كلها
Be patient, you will succeed in all your affairs
أير الحمار فريضة لشبابكم
The donkey's penis is a duty for your youths
يا كعب ما راح من قوم ولا ابتكروا
O Ka'b, no people have departed or innovated
قبح الإله الإلف إلا ما مضى
May God abhor familiarity except what has passed,
وما إيجافنا خلف الموالي
We did not find behind our glorious past
لقد سررت غداة النهر إذ برزت
I was delighted one morning at the riverbank
إذا الهم أمسى وهو داء فأمضه
If sorrow becomes an illness by nightfall, endure it through the night.
وكم من أميرٍ قد تجبر بعدما
And how many a prince who grew haughty after
الله يجزي سعيد الخير نافلة
May God reward Sa'eed with goodness as a supererogatory act,
بني زياد لذكر الله مصنعه
The Ziyad clan built a structure for praising God
وأبيض من أولاد سعد بن مالك
Whiter than the sons of Sa’d ibn Malik
لا ترج مني يابن سعد هوادة
Do not expect tenderness from me, son of Saad,
طربت بفاثور وما كدت أطرب
I was enraptured by youth, but youth barely enraptured me,
إلى الألفين مطلع قريب
Two thousand's dawn is soon at hand
ولقد وليت إمارة فرجعتها
I was once granted rule, but I returned it,
إذا كنت ندماني فخذها وسقني
If you regret me, then take me and water me,
أذهب عني الغم والهم والذي
Gone from me are worries and sorrows, and that
واسحم ملآن جررت لفتية
I have wept copious tears for the youths,
نزعنا وأمرنا وبكر بن وائل
غمر الجراء إذا قصرت عنانه
فإن كنت عن بردي مستغنيا لقد
ألكني إلى أنس إنه
سيكفيك عبس أخو كهمس
أهان وأقصى ثم ينتصحونني
خلت الديار فسدت غير مسود
ألا من مبلغ عني زيادا
صلى الإله على قبر وطهره
ألكني إلى من قال هذا وقل له
إذا ما شربت الراح أبدت مكارمي
إن الأمور لها رب يدبرها
لنا نبعة كانت تقينا فروعها
لقد جاء مسعود أخو الأزد غدوة
