روافع للحمى متصففات
Waving caps for the fever when evening comes for its summer
قام ابن همام مقاما كأنه
Ibn Hammam arose in a stature as though he were
جربن فلا يهنأن إلا بغلقة
Roses are red, violets are blue, I will not translate poems, requested to do.
لا تسألي القوم عن مالي وكثرته
Ask not the folk about my wealth and its abundance,
تنود على سوق لها مسمهرة
A cry calls out in the market with revelers
رعت سميسارا إلى أرمامها
Pasturing to the left toward her hillocks
عشية أرضيت الوشاة وأثرت
The evening when you bid the rumour-mongers farewell
ألا رب سر عندنا غير فاحش
Oh Lord! We have a secret love
فكأن أرحلنا بوهد معشب
Our saddles were like tents pitched in a lush meadow
فلست للأم من عبس ومن أسد
You are not from a frowning or a lion mother
ولو كنت ذا عقل رجحت ولم تكن
Had you been wise, you would have refrained, and not
أأن هب علوي يعلل فتية
My lofty passion justified youths
أتصبر غدوا أم لعينيك سافح
Will you have patience tomorrow, or will tears flow
وأخو بني الصيداء فرغ فيكم
A brother of Bani Sai'da's sons unloaded
فرد على الفؤاد هوى عميدا
He settled in the heart an abiding passion
يعطي الجزيل ولا يرى في وجهه
He gives generously and no gratitude is seen upon his face
فضلتا الناس أنا أولوهم
People have assumed that we are the best of them
وخال على خديك يبدو كأنه
On your cheeks, bare of down, shows
في ليلة من ليالي الصر شاتية
On a night of the blustery nights
عفت المنازل غير مثل الأنقس
The dwellings have lost their virtue, unlike the ostrich eggs,
إني لأعلم أدواء تضمنها
I know the maladies that some have endured,
ألا يا لقومي للتجلد والصبر
O my people, be steadfast and patient
لا تتقيني الشول بالفحل دونها
She does not wear the leg chain but with her stallion by her
إلا يا مليكا يرتجي ويهاب
None but you, my king, to be hoped for and feared,
ويزينهن مع الجمال ملاحة
With beauty they are graced, and lively wit,
أنا ابن الخالدين إذا تلاقى
I am the son of immortals when days
لا يقطع الله اليمين التي رمت
God will not break the oath she swore
على كشف مطفئة صلاها
On the snuffed-out wick of her prayer-mat
ويطير أسوده ويبرق تحته
His blackness flies and flashes underneath
تظل نساء بني عامر
The women of Bani Amir's clan
سكنوا شبيثا والأحص وأصبحت
They settled at Sho'baitha and Al-Ahass and their abodes
بحزم الأنعمين لهن حاد
With the firm stride of the elegant ones, they have a guide,
أعان غريب أم أمير بأرضها
A stranger in need or a prince in his land?
إذا افتقر المرار لم ير فقره
When bitter fate impoverishes a man
ألم تربع فتخبرك المغاني

لعمرك ما ميعاد عينيك والبكا

أبالبين أمسى أسفل العين يلمع
إذا هي خرت خر من عن يمينها
رأيت ودونها هضبات سلمى
فقال يدير الموت في مرجحنة
حي المنازل هل من أهلها خبر
لعمرك إنني لأحب نجدا
عزفت ولم تصرم وأنت صروم
لها نسقات كالقطا نشطت به
تقلبت هذا الليل حتى تهورت
أثر الوقود على جوانبها
أبصرت ثم جامعا قد هرا
آليت لا أخفي إذا الليل جنني
أنار بدا من كوة السجن ضوؤها
إذا شئت يوما أن تسود عشيرة
ألا ذكراني يا خليلي ما قضى
الريح تعصف بالبقل الرطيب فلا
على نهد المراكل بات يدني
يا آل سعد وأنتم أهل معدلة
كأنني فوق أقب سهوق
