1. Our saddles were like tents pitched in a lush meadow,
Near a valley of Unaizah with overflowing pools.
١. فَكَأَنَّ أَرحُلنا بِوَهْدِ مُعشِبٍ
بَلوى عُنَيزَةٍ مِن مَفيضِ الترمُسِ
2. Where partridges mingled together at evening,
Each cock goes to roost with his own hens.
٢. في حَيثُ خالَطت الخزامى عَرفَجا
يَأتيك قابس أَهلِهِ لَم يَقْبِسِ
3. Tribesmen camped in the homes of their sons,
Their tents guarded, with tent-poles like spearheads.
٣. وَأَحَلَّ أَقوامٌ بُيوتَ بَنِيهم
قَرقاً مَدافِعُها بِعادَ الأَرؤُسِ
4. They took hold of the straps of the saddle-bags and found
Little inside but crumbs in the depths.
٤. فَتَناوَلوا شَعبَ الرِّحالِ فَقَلَّصَتْ
سودُ البُطونِ كَفَضلَةِ المُتَنَمِّسِ
5. They slept a while, then said, “We leave at dawn.”
Not bedded softly, uneasily lodged.
٥. فَتَناوموا شَيئاً وَقالوا عرسوا
في غَيرِ تَنْئِمَةٍ بِغَيرِ مُعَرِّسِ
6. Buying no sleep, the sleep that came to them
Was medicine for their eyes and fixed their gaze.
٦. لا يَشتَرونَ بِهَجعَةٍ هَجَعوا بِها
وَدَواء أَعيُنِهِم خُلودَ الأَوْجَسِ
7. I have turned my back on my fellow tribesmen.
By this nose of mine, I shall not be led.
٧. إِنّي لَوافِرُ مَعشَري أَعراضهم
إِنّي وَهَذا الأَنف غَير مُؤَبَّسِ
