كأن خيال الذئب تحت دفوفها

As if the wolf's shadow beneath its warmth

إذا عرضت داوية مدلهمة

Where the rose has thorns to prick

خليلي قوما في عطالة فانظرا

My two friends, stop for a while and look

ألم تر أن الغزو يعرج أهله

Do you not see that war makes its people

أشاقك رسم المنزل المتقادم

The homesickness of the old dwelling has pained you

فلو أن أيام المنون تركننا

If only the days of demise had left us be

إذا نابت الدعوى وحورض عندها

When vengeance is sought and battle engaged

سقاني سبيع شربة فرويتها

A draught of water quenched my thirst,

لئن ظفرتم بشيخ من مشايخنا

If you have captured an elder of ours

ونحن أناس لا حجاز بأرضنا

We are a people with no refuge in our land

تحلل وعالج ذات نفسك وانظرن

Seek within, heal yourself, and look around

ودارة الكور كانت من محلتنا

The ball court was part of our neighborhood

هين ما يقول فيك اللاحي

How trivial what the slanderers say of you

وموعدنا بالقتل يحسب أنه

Our tryst with death is thought a thing that will

أراعك بالبين الخليط المهجر

You alarmed me, separation, with your mixed-up exile

إذا ما تعشى ليلة من أكيلة

When the night comes with food aplenty

أرى آل يربوع وأفناء مالك

I see the tribe of Yarbou' and the estates of Malik

ما زال منا حامل للوائنا

Among us there remains a bearer of our banners

تقول ابنة العوفي ألا ترى

The daughter of Al-Awfi says: Do you not see

ارتعت للزور إذ حيا وأرقني
