1. If only the days of demise had left us be
And we lived together, unharmed by their harm
١. فَلَو أَنَّ أَيامَ المَنونِ تَرَكنَنا
فَعِشنا مَعاً ما ضَرَّنا مَن تُخُرِّما
2. One of us would still carry our banner
And kindle a fire for the dew wherever it led
٢. وَمازالَ مِنّا حامِلٌ لِلوائِنا
وَموقِدُ نارٍ لِلنَدى حَيثُ يَمَّما
3. But some days of fate wrought
New events for us, razing our glories
٣. وَلَكِنَّ أَياماً مِنَ الدَهرِ أَحدَثَت
لَنا حَدَثاً أَوهى عُروشاً وَهَدَّما
4. The bite of grief brought us no surcease
Nor did depths of consolation engender calm
٤. وَما زادَنا عَضُّ الثِقافِ قَناتَنا
وَلا شِدَّةُ العَزّاءِ إِلا تَكَرُّما
