أعلمتني ألقي عصا التسيار

You taught me to cast off restraint

إن خير الفتوح ما جاء عفواً

The best conquest comes peacefully,

بنفسي الراية البيضاء تهفو

The white flag flutters with my breath

جاء وفي يساره

He came, in his left hand a bow

عدوكم بخطوب الدهر مقصود

Your enemy is destined for misfortune

ثاب العزاء وحان الأخذ بالثار

The time for consolation has passed, and the time for vengeance has come

ولد العبد الذي إنعامكم

The servant whom your favors raised

له حلبة الخيل العتاق كأنها

The horse arena is like young women seeking music and splendor

لا تغبط المجدب في علمه

Do not envy the knowledgeable in his knowledge,

وبكر من بنات الدوح حبلى

And a virgin among the daughters of Dauh, pregnant

رحل الشباب وما سمعت بعبرة

Youth has departed, yet no tears have I shed

دعا الشوق قلبي والركائب والركبا

Longing called to my heart and to the riders and the mounts

يا أيها المنصور بأسك رحمة

O Mansur, your might is a mercy upon us

إن الشدائد قد تغشى الكريم لأن

Indeed, hardships may overwhelm the noble man so that

تراه عيني وكفي لا يباشره

My eyes behold him, my hand cannot touch,

إذا ما الصديق نبا وده

When a friend changes in his affection,

ركب إلى نار الجحيم مسيرهم

They journey to hellfire, their destination,

بشراي هذا لواء قل ما عقدا

My good tidings, this is a banner rarely furled

ليت الشباب الذي ولت نضارته

Would that the youth whose bloom has passed me by

رأى العداة ومنهم من دنا ونأى

He saw the enemies, some close, some distant,

أشكو لذي الإحسان عبد المحسن

I complain to the one of kindness, Abdel Mohsin

سأستجدي صغيراً من كبير

I will implore a little from the great

سأشكو إلى الندمان خمر زجاجة

I will complain to the remorseful about the wine of a bottle

قضى حقوق الله في أعدائه

He fulfilled the rights of God against His enemies

يا رشأ السدرِ ولو أنني

O tender branches of lote-tree, if only I

ألا مقت الله سعى الحريص

Alas, how God abhors the greedy man’s endeavors,

هل زيدت الشمس للأنوار أنوارا

Has the sun increased its lights with more lights?

ملك ترويك منه شيمة

A king whose nobility quenches your thirst

دع العين تجني الحب من موقع النظر

Let the eyes reap love from the site of looking,

من لم يؤدبه تأديب الكتاب فما

He who is not disciplined by the discipline of the Book

أتى بلا رحب ولا مكنة

وقائلة تقول وقد رأتني

أجل الأسى فأسل دم الأجفان

بعلاكم وهو حسب المطنب

قيل لي أودى سعيد بن عيسى

ألا اصفح عن الطرف الذي زل إذ جرى

قلائد فتح كان يذخرها الدهر

أتراه يترك الغزلا

أسائلكم لمن جيش لهام

وأغيد من أبناء لحظة شادن

لا ذنب للطرف إن زلت قوائمه
