وفتيان صدق من تميم وجوههم

And truthful young men from Tameem, their faces

إذا حانت وفاتي فادفنوني

When my death comes then bury me

قل للسري أبي قيس أتوعدنا

Tell the secretive Abu Qais, do you threaten us

اجعلوا إن مت يوما كفني

If I die one day, let my shroud be

فان تسق من أعناب وج فإننا

Roses are red, violets are blue

شربنا شربة من ذات عرق

We drank a draught of juice from the vine,

ولها دبيب في العظام كأنه

And it has a subtle thrill in the bones, as though it were

كأن أباريق المدام لديهم

Their wine jugs seem like gazelles

وصاحب حانوت عشوت لناره

The shopkeeper lit a fire for us

لما سمعت الديك صاح بسحرة

When I heard the rooster crow at dawn

ثبت الناس على راياتهم

The people have persisted in their banners

إذا ما بعتني كوزا بخط

If you sell me as a cup with your writing

أعاذل لو شربت الراح حتى

I would excuse you if you drank wine until

صيرت نفسي بالإحسان محسدة

I have made myself envied through kindness

ولو أن لي دارا يحل دخولها

Even if I had a house where entering was possible

أبا منذر رمت الامور فقستها

Abu Mundhir, you examined matters and questioned them

لا تغبطن ذليلا في معيشته

Do not envy a wretch for his life,

من قهوة تنزو جناديعها

From a coffee that pours its cups

ندامى بعد ثالثة تلاقوا

My regrets, after three met

يا ابن من يكتب في الأرقاب

O son of one who writes on the dunes

تصبح بوجه الراح والطائر السعد

You woke up with the face of comfort and the happy bird

فإن هذا الوطب لي ضائر

This hot drink is harmful to me

رضيع المدام فارق الراح روحه

The infant of the tavern left his soul

أكلت الضباب فما عفتها

I have eaten clouds yet my hunger was not appeased

وقهوة كالعقيق صافية

Coffee like pure garnet

فما حرم الرحمن من تمر عجوة

What the Merciful forbade not of luscious dates,

شبت جدي وجدي مؤثر

My youth and vigor were influential

نزلت على آل المهلب شاتيا

I arrived as a guest at the home of Al Muhalab

تركت الخمور لأربابها

I left wines to their owners

يا لقومي فتنتني جارتي

Oh my people, my neighbor has tempted me

إذا صليت خمسا كل يوم

If I pray five times every day

طال عتب الزمان ظلما علينا

Long has time's reproach oppressed us unjustly

يدي لا تعاف الكأس أنسا بشربها

آلى يمينا أبو الهندي كاذبة

سقيت أبا المطرح إذ أتاني

سألناه الجزيل فما تأنى

وفارة مسك من عذار شممتها

إن كنت ندماني أبا مالك

إمزجاها واسقياني واشربا

إذا ما ألح البرد فاجعل دثاره

شربت الخمر في رمضان حتى

أصبب على قلبك من بردها

الآن تم لي السرور بقربكم
