ويشكر لا تستطيع الوفاء

He thanks but cannot keep his promise

يا أيها الجاهل الجاري ليدركني

O ignorant one who is trying to reach me,

بلى فعرفتهن مقصرات

Yes, I knew them with foreheads humble

إذا مات منهم سيد ودعامة

If a chief or pillar dies among them

يا من بمغدى الشمس أو بمراحها

O you who were at the sunset of the sun or in its resting place

لعمرك ما أدري وإن كنت داريا

By your life, I don't know, though I try to see,

ويشكر تشكر من ضامها

He thanks for being wronged,

عجبت والدهر كثير عجبه

I wondered, and time has many wonders

كأنك من جمال بني تميم

As if you were from the beautiful women of Banu Tamim

إذا كنت مرتاد السماحة والندى

If you are a frequent visitor of generosity and dew,

يحدثنا أن القيامة قد أتت

He tells us the Resurrection has come

يقصر باع العاملي عن العلا

Over the worker's reach is the height

قالوا الأشاقر تهجوكم فقلت لهم

They said the despicable ones satirize you, so I said to them

أتتك الأزد تعثر في لحاها

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.

أتينا أبا عمرو فأشلى كلابه

We came to Abu Amr and he set his dogs on us

إلى سلم أبي حرب بن حرب

To Salam Abu Harb bin Harb

هل تسمع الأزد ما يقال لها

Does Al-Azd hear what is said to her

إني رأيت عداتكم

I saw your return

ما إن سمعت ولا رأيت عجيبة

I have never heard or seen a wonder

لا يبرح الدهر منهم خارئ أبدا

Never will time leave their abode empty,

لعمرك ما الديباج خرقت وحده

By your life, you have not torn the silk alone,

تراه إذا ما جئته متهللا

When you come to him, humbly,

وبوأت قدري موضعا فوضعتها

إن حبناء كان يدعى جبيرا

لو أن بكرا براه الله راحلة

ترى الطفل منهم يبتغي المجد شيمة

The child among them seeks glory as a trait

يزيد يزيد الخير لولا سماحه

Good increases good if not for his tolerance

إن السماحة والمروءة والندى

Generosity, integrity, and benevolence

نحن قطعنا من أبي صفرة قلفته

We cut from Abu Sufreh

رأيتك أمس خير بني معد

I saw you yesterday, O best of Ma'add's sons

وأعلم أنني وأبا حميد

I know that Abu Humaid and I

لقد لج هذا الدهر في نكباته

Indeed this age has overwhelmed me with its calamities,

إذا ما اتقى الله امرؤ وأطاعه

If a man fears God and obeys Him

سود ذوائبها بيض ترائبها

Black are her tresses, white are her adornments

فإن تك يا عباد وليت شرطة

O servants, if you are made police officers

قاد الجيوش لخمس عشرة حجة

He led the armies for fifteen pilgrimages

وما ترك الهاجون لي إن هجوته

He left me no flesh visible on bone

نحن قطعنا من أبي صفرة

We have cut off from Abu Safarah

ألم تر أن البغل يتبع إلفه

Don't you see that the mule only follows his familiar ways,

أنت الفتى كل الفتى

You are the best of men

فهل لك في حاجتي حاجة

Do you care for my need while ignoring it,

وقافية حذاء بت أحوكها

And an agile rhyme I knit her verses tight

وأنبئتهم يستصرخون بكاهل

They cried out with shoulders bent by burdens

أضرمت نارك في اليفاع بعرفج

You kindled your fire on the highland of Arafaj

ألا قل لكعب الأشقري بلؤمكم

Tell Ka'b al-Ashqari with your blame,

أبا خالد بادت خراسان بعدكم

O Abu Khalid, Khorasan has withered after you all,

أرى كل قوم ينسل اللؤم عندهم

I see that cowardice departs from every tribe,

فلله عينا من رأى كقضية

Blessed are the eyes that saw my case

نبأتني أن عبد الله منتزع

You told me that Abdullah is taking back

إذا عذب الله الرجال بشعرهم

When God torments men for their poetry

إذا لقيتك تبدي لي مكاشرة

When I meet you, you show me friendliness

جزى الله خيرا والجزاء بكفه

May Allah reward with goodness, and the reward is in His hand,

ومتى يؤامر نفسه مستلحيا

And when he resolves, armed,

عجبت لأبيض الخصيين عبد

I marvel at the white-robed captive, Abd,

برئنا إلى المران بكر بن وائل

We have been cleared of ties with the house of Marwan son of Wa'il

سألت أبا جهضم حاجة

I asked Abu Jahm for a need

وسميت غياظا ولست بغائظ

You are called hot-tempered, yet you are not wrathful

قضى الله خلق الناس ثم خلقتم

Allah decreed the creation of mankind, then you were created

إذا يشكري مس ثوبك ثوبه

أمن قطر حالت فقلت لها قري

وجدت العامري بن الزبعرى

تغني أنت في ذممي وعهدي

لئن نصبت لي الروقين معترضا

بل لو سألت أخا ربيعة دغفلا

فتى زاده السلطان في الخير رغبة

أخ لك ليس خلته بمذق

وتكعم كلب الحي من خشية القرى

يحذرني الموت ابن حبناء والفتى

أصابت علينا جودك العين يا عمر

وفينا كل أروع لم يروع

ألم تر أن اللؤم حل عماده

لولا أمير هلكت يشكر

فأبلغ أبا حفص رسالة ناصح

قبيلة خيرها شرها

ألم تر أنني وترت قوسي

يكاد إذا ما أبصر الضيف كلبه

لكل قبيلة قمر ونجم

وكائن ترى من صامت لك معجب زيادته
