دعا طرفه طرفي فأقبل مسرعا

دعتني إلى وصلها جهرة

She called me openly to meet her

رب ليل أمد من نفس العاشق

Many a night whose breath dragged on

ليت شعري أي قوم أجدبوا

I wish I knew which people suffered drought

عدمت جهالتي وفقدت حمقي

I lost my ignorance and missed my foolishness

لما رأيت البدر في

When I saw the full moon rising

نشرت غدائر شعرها لتظلني

She spread her braids to shade me

بالذي أنبت في خديك

By Him who grew a rose in your cheek

له وجنات في بياض وحمرة

He has gardens of white and red,

وعاشق جاءه كتاب

A lover received a letter

ذنبي إليه خضوعي حين أبصره

My sin to him is my submission when I see him

لا تنكرن رحيلي عنك في عجل

Do not deny my departure from you in haste

وإني أكمن السر عندي وإن أتى

And I conceal the secret within me, even if

جعلت عنان ودي في يديكا

I have placed my love in your hands

أتمنى الذي إذا أنا أومأ

I wish for one who, if I hint

نجل العيون قواصد النبل

The stars of beauty, arrows of fate,

وما غاضت محاسنه ولكن

His beauty has not faded, but

أما تريني ناحل الجسم

Don't you see how my body wastes away

لم يبق إلا نفس خافت

There remains but a faint breath

سلي عائداتي كيف أبصرن كربتي

A gazelle like the crescent moon - if you look upon her

زعموا أن من تشاغل بالذات

They claimed that one preoccupied with self

من الظباء ظباء همها السخب

Among the gazelles is a gazelle, whose only concern is the morning dew,

بكت عيني غداة البين دمعا

My eyes wept tears the morning we parted

وكيف صبر النفس عن غادة

How can the soul be patient without Ghada,

أرى غيما تؤلفه جنوب

I see a cloud being gathered by the south wind

لي إلى الريح حاجة لو قضتها

I need the wind to fulfill my wish

لما أناخوا قبيل الصبح عيسهم

When they halted just before dawn broke their camels,

أقفر مغنى الديار بالنجف

The dwellings in Najaf are desolate of song,

لو يكتب الناس أسماء الملوك إذا

رهينة أرواج وصوب رعود

وقمت أداري الدمع والقلب حائر

مكتئب ذو كبد حرى

لا تظن الذي جرى

هناك طعم النوم يا راقد

معذب القلب بالفراق

ولقد قلت حين قبلت منه

وما في الأرض أشقى من محب

يزيدني ما استزدت من صلته

إن وصفوني فناحل الجسد

شادن وجهه من البدر أوضا

شعر حي أتاك من لفظ ميت

كرات عينك في العدا

رأيتك لا تختار إلا تباعدي

مدمن التخفيف موصول

المزن يمحو بكف ما له قلم
