الأخضر اللهبي

وسمينا الأطايب من قريش

We have named the virtuous ones from Quraysh

وعلى طيبة التي بارك الله

And upon Taybah which Allah has blessed

سلي عالجت عليا عن شبابي

I asked Uliya about my youth

كأنهم ورقاق الريط تحملهم

As though they were thin pages being blown

إن الخليط أجدوا البين فانجردوا

They found the gap between us wide, so they withdrew,

بني عمنا ردوا الدراهم إنه

Our cousins returned the dirhams, for

أبونا قصي كان يدعى مجمعا

My friend, a true poem

هاشم بحر إذا سما وطما

Hashim is an ocean, when it rises high and rages

عبد شمس أبي فإن كنت غضبى

A slave of an angry father, so if you are angry

ولما رأيت المال مألف أهله

When I saw wealth become dear to its people

وقد يحكم الأيام من كان جاهلا

And the days may give judgment over one who was ignorant

أتعهد من سليمى ذات نوء

I pledge from my heart full of light

أتبكي أن رأيت لام وهب

Do you weep when you see the reproach of blame

ماذا تحاول من شتمي ومنقصتي

What do you gain from insulting and belittling me?

قد تجرت عقرب في سوقنا

The scorpion prowled in our marketplace

أعيني ألا تبكيا لمصيبتي

My eyes, do not weep for my misfortune,

ألا يا ابن هند إنني غير غافل

O son of India, I am not unaware,

ماذا أردت إلى شتمي ومنقصتي

What did you want with insulting me and belittling me

فإنك وادكارك أم وهب

For you and the memory of you are a loving mother,

شاب رأسي ولداتي لم تشب

My hair has grayed while my children have not yet grown up

عوجا على ربع سعدى كي نسائله

Turn aside at Su'ad's abode that we may question her,

نحن الذين إذا سما لفخارهم

We are those when they boast of their pride

مهلا بني عمنا مهلا موالينا

Slow down, oh sons of our uncle, slow down, oh our dear ones

ونحلل من تهامة كل سهب

From Tihama we unload every plain,

وقلن لخو اليوم لما وجدته

And I said to the one I loved today when I found him

وإن هي كالمهاة غدت تبادي

Even if she is like a dove that exchanges

ما تصابى الكبير بعد اكتهال

The great man does not grieve after perfection

فإن يغضبك قولي في علي

If my words in praise of Ali offend you,

ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب

O Messenger, convey to Mu'awiya ibn Harb,

فلا تسألونا سيفكم إن سيفكم

So ask not for the sword that failed its lord,

ألم يأت سلمى فأينا ومقامنا

Has not Salma come, so where is our abode

كان ابن حرب عظيم القدر في الناس

Ibn Harb was mighty esteemed among the people

وقافية عقام قلت بكر

The qafiya of 'uqam, I said the first time

أتيتك خالا وابن عم وعمة

I came to you as a maternal uncle and a cousin,

ما كنت أحسب أن الأمر منصرف

I did not think the matter would turn away

جبريل أهدى لنا الخيرات أجمعها

Gabriel brought us all goodness

يا صاحب العيس التي رحلت

O friend of the convoy that was sent off

سبقنا ولم نسبق وضمنا ولم نضم

We led when none led, and we gained when none gained,

زعم ابن سلمى أن حلمي ضر بي

Ibn Salma claimed that my forbearance has harmed me

هلا سألت وأنت خير خليفة

Why not ask, O best successor,

يا مي إن تفقدي قوما ولدتهم

وإنك والحنين إلى سليمى

ألا أحمي وأذكر إرث قوم

لنحوك يا بطلوس عزمي قد طلب

أقول لأصحابي بسفح محسر

نظرت وهرشى بيننا وبصاقها

طرب الشيخ ولا حين طرب

ما بات قوم كرام يدعون يدا

أتطلب ثأرا لست منه ولا له

بعمي سقى الله الحجاز وأهله

هاشم شمس بالسعد مطلعها

إذا ما أردت وداد امرئ

يا عمرو حسبك من خدع ووسواس

تأمل خليلي هل ترى من ظعائن

هيهات منك قعيقعان وبلدح
