- أجيرة بيتي ما لكم بكم السهوO neighbors of my house, what ails you? You are heedless.
- أحق ما كان من قلبي تباريحThe truest stirrings of my heart are agonies;
- أدار البلى أما عمرت بمعشريO abode of decay, have you not been peopled with my companions?
- أرى عقرب الصدغ في خدهI see the scorpion of his temple-lock on his cheek,
- ألبستنا العدل أبراداً مفوفةYou clothed us in justice—striped mantles—
- الله أطفأ ما أذكى أبو قصبهGod extinguished what Abu Qasabah had kindled
- الله أكبر هذا وجه إسحاقاGod is greatest! This is the face of Ishaq.
- الناس في السلم والعشاق بينهمPeople are at peace, while the lovers among them
- بشراي دالت دولة المعصومGlad tidings for me! The Infallible's reign has come,
- تفاحة بت بها ليلتيAn apple—I spent my night with it,
- تفاحة حامضة عضهاA sour apple was bitten
- تلهي العيون رقومه فكأنهاIts patterns captivate the eyes, as though
- حدثني الشوق عن تباريحيLonging told me of my torments:
- حذار حذار من ركون إلى الزمنBeware, beware of putting trust in time!
- رضى بقضاء الله فهو مصيبBe content with God's decree, for it is right,
- سوسنة بيضاء قد أودعتA white lily has enclosed
- صبراً أبا عبد الإله عن التيPatience, Abu Abd al-Ilah, in losing her
- عاديت في الله قوماً أنكروا رصداًI opposed a people in God who denied guidance
- قف بربع الأسى وقوف الطليحStand at sorrow's dwelling as one exhausted stands,
- لقد طهر الرحمان آل محمدIndeed, the All-Merciful purified Muhammad’s family,
- له قلم تنقاد بيض الظبا لهHe has a pen to which white sword-blades submit,
- مفتتن في نفسه فاتنInfatuated with himself, enchanting
- وخبرني الناعون ما صنع الردىThe death-announcers told me what Death had done
- وقالوا أتهواه على قلح بهThey said, did you get drunk on sour milk?
- يا برق برقاً بين مروة والصفاO lightning, flash between Marwah and Safa
- يا من لصبح الشيب كيف تنفساWho will help with the dawn of gray hair—how it breathed
