Be content with God's decree, for it is right,
Content with whatever fate God decrees
and bear calamities patiently, for they recur.
And patience for whatever events occur

My two friends, the earth has buried my loved ones,
My dear friend, dust now shrouds my loved ones
and no beloved remains for me above the earth.
None remains above the dust for me to love
أَقَلّاreduce, you two وُقوفاًlingering بِالمَنازِلِat the dwellings أَوقِفاor halt, you two

Linger little at the dwellings—or halt;
Stop less frequently at the halting places
for what you two deem distant is near.
For what you think is far, is actually near
أَلَمhave you not تُخبَراbeen told, you two عَنabout صاحِبِthe inhabitant القَبرِof the grave إِنَّهُthat he

Have you two not been told of the grave's inhabitant—that he
Were you not told of the occupant of the grave?
is within sight of his kin, yet a stranger?
Though distant from both groups, he's in clear view

His friends warned one another away from him in despair, and now
Both neighbors and friends have despaired of him
they come and go around him.
Coming and going around him as they please

What separation sets a greater distance than the grave,
What life could be pleasant away from the grave?
and what continued life can be sweet amid death?
What life with death could possibly please?

Turn aside to the abandoned grave and offer greetings;
Bid peace to the desolate, bending tomb
may the life-giving autumn rain water it as it falls.
When the tattooed arrowsman takes aim and shoots

Otherwise, if rain refuses, my eye is a rain cloud,
Else my streaming eyes, if rain does not fall
its downpour streaming northward and southward.
South and north winds make flow and ebb

When remembrance of loved ones stirs it, it bursts into tears,
When thought of loved ones convulses my heart
and tears stream down, mingled with blood.
Tears mixed with blood pour forth in a flood

My grief visited me at night, and I spent the night as though
My concerns put me to bed as if I were
a watcher over the rising stars.
A watcher over the stars' rising places
كَأَنَّas though اِطِّلاعَthe rising الشُهبِof the stars بَينَbetween مَحاجِريmy eye sockets

As though the stars rose within my eye sockets,
As if the meteors' setting between my eyelids
appearing from my eye and vanishing within it.
Would from my sight disappear and then show
كَأَنَّas though الدُجىthe darkness وَالشُهبُand the stars هَمّيmy grief

As though the darkness and the stars were my grief
It's as if my concerns and the meteors
and its fire, when a flame from it flares within my ribs.
Were one, and when their fire flared in my chest, a blaze

My breaths break off, and I pass my night
My breath fragments, and so I break up the night
in yearning, like aged she-camels longing for their young.
Yearning, as a she-camel yearns for her young

I speak, my soul and sorrow having mingled,
I say, and my soul and grief intermingled
and my heart melts from separation's heat.
And my heart from the heat of parting melts
أَلاis there no مِثلَlikeness ليfor me فَإِنَّهُfor it ليfor me مُعجِزٌis beyond reach

Is there no likeness for me? It is beyond my power,
I have no equal, for in that I'm incapable
though I am prolific at drawing likenesses of humankind.
Though for people generally, I'm exemplary

Whenever I speak of a thing, it is as though I were it—
If I speak of something, it's as if I were it
and strange is the secret of the comparison-makers' choices.
A marvel how taking similes makes one eloquent
أَناI المَيتُthe dead one وَالثَكلانُand the bereaved وَالصَبُّand the lovesick وَالشَجيand the sorrowful

I am the dead one, the bereaved, the lovesick, the sorrowful;
I'm the dead, the bereft, the youth wasted away
what likeness, after these, can I find?
After that, what likeness could I possibly attain?

My only solace is a tomb, as though it were,
I'm settled only in a tomb, as if to console me
through my fondness for it, a dark, hand-reared gazelle.
A wild animal nourished its young within

I return to kiss its earth, as though it were,
I return to lick the dust in it, as if
for me to sip from, a radiant, youthful mouth.
It were a sweet mouth of youth I adore

Ali abides, hidden in its earth,
Ali remained concealed in his burial place
and the full moon sets after it rises.
Though the moon must set after it has risen

Far from his brothers, held within a hollow
Far from friends, held by a firm tomb
that gives off fragrance from his breath and grows sweet.
Which sips his breath and is sweetened

On a journey with no provision but piety,
On a journey where his provision was but piety
from which no traveler among humankind returns.
The throngs cannot divert him or lead him astray

My brother—calamities resolutely snatched him from me;
Misfortune snatched him away from me suddenly
and time is nothing but a despoiler and one despoiled.
Time takes away and despoils constantly
وَكُنتُand I used to أُرَجّيhope أَنthat تَزيدَwould prolong حَياتَهُhis life

I had hoped that his life would be lengthened
I had hoped his life would add to mine
by mine; but Death marred my life for me.
But fates opposed my hopes aggressively
وَكُنتُand I used to أُرَجّيهِcount on him لِكُلِّfor every مُلِمَّةٍcalamity

فَقالَthen said الرَدىDeath إِنَّindeed الرَجاءَhope كَذوبُis deceitful
I had counted on him in every calamity,
I had hoped in every calamity he would be there
but Death said, 'Hope is deceitful.'
But destiny said hopes are mendacity

He was swift when summoned to generosity,
He was quick to respond when called to help
and how many a young man is called but does not answer!
Though many are called but do not reply
وَكانَand he was حَياًlife-giving rain فيin المَحلِdrought يَعلَمُknew ضَيفُهُhis guest

إِذاwhen أَمَّهُhe sought him out أَنَّthat المَحَلَّthe abode خَصيبُwas fertile
He was rain in drought; his guest knew,
He brought life to the guest house, letting all know
when he sought him out, that his abode was fertile.
Its precincts would welcome hospitality
وَلَمand not يَكُwas ذpossessed of (truncated) عَيبٍa flaw وَلاnor كانَwas عائِباًa fault-finder

He had no flaw, nor was he a fault-finder,
He had no fault or anything to criticize
but pure in both his garments, well-mannered.
Rather, was of pure garb, full of nobility
فَتىًa young man هُوَhe حَدُّthe edge السَيفِof the sword إِنif رُمتَyou sought ضَيمَهُto wrong him

A young man, the edge of a sword if you sought to wrong him,
We approved of him since no weakness was found
and a tender, green branch to whoever sought generosity.
No seeker of good from him was denied

يَداًa hand لِثَوابٍfor reward وَهوَwhile he كانَused to يُثيبُgive rewards
Independent of others, he would not stretch out
But fate frowned and took his youth away
a hand for reward, though he himself gave rewards.
Eyes and hearts tilted toward him, refracted
جَميلٌhandsome فَأَمّاand as for وَجهُهُhis face فَمُنَوَّرٌthen radiant
طَليقٌcheerful وَأَمّاand as for صَدرُهُhis breast فَرَحيبُthen spacious
Handsome—as for his face, it was radiant,
It redoubled my pain and intensified his loss
cheerful; as for his breast, it was spacious.
My consolation from him receded dubiously
رُزيناهُwe suffered his loss لَمّاwhen لَمnot يَكُنwas فيهِin him مَطعَنٌa blemish
وَلَمand not يَكُwas راجيone hoping for الخَيرِgood مِنهُfrom him يَخيبُdisappointed
We suffered his loss when no blemish could be found in him,
He's not like one whose era has long passed
and no one seeking good from him was disappointed.
Whose memory with us faded and dimmed
وَأَلوىand swept off بِهِwith him المِقدارُfate غَضاًstill fresh شَبابُهُhis youth
تَميلُincline إِلَيهِtoward him أَعيُنٌeyes وَقُلوبُand hearts
Fate swept him away with his youth still fresh,
I say as a mourning dove sang her refrain
eyes and hearts inclining toward him.
And swayed amongst the branches of trees
فَضاعَفَso doubled وَجديmy grief وَاِستَحَرَّand grew fierce مُصابُهُhis loss
وَوَلّىand fled عَزائيmy consolation عَنهُfrom him وَهوَwhile it مُريبُwas doubtful
So my grief doubled, and the pain of his loss grew fierce,
I implore the branches, as I'm most adept
and my consolation fled from him, beset by doubt.
At lamentation amongst the skillful singers
وَلَيسَand he is not كَمَفقودٍlike one lost تَقادَمَgrew distant in time عَهدُهُhis time

He is not like one lost whose time is long past,
I was made to drink the wine of ardent longing
and whom our wiping away and gray hair have veiled.
Its intoxication preoccupies lovers' thoughts
أَقولُI say وَقَدwhen already غَنَّتsang حَمامَةُa dove أَيكَةٍof a thicket

وَمالَand swayed بِهاwith her بَينَamong الأَراكِthe arak trees قَضيبُa branch
I say, as a dove in a thicket sings,
One rejoicing at our misfortune was revealed
and a branch among the arak trees sways with her:
Though fate's manifestations are myriad
أَساجِعَةَO cooing bird الأَغصانِof the branches نوحاًlament فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I

O cooing bird of the branches, lament—for I
So I said: await what destiny will unfold
delight in lament above all melodies.
Since it may bring you sins though yours are abundant
I was given to drink حُمَياthe intoxicating potency الشَوقِof longing فَالهَمُّso grief سُكرُهاis its intoxication
وَأَكثَرُand most ماof what أَلهىdistracts المَشوقَthe yearning one نَحيبُis sobbing
I was given longing's potent draught; grief is its intoxication,
We cried seeking reward for our crying
and sobbing is what most absorbs the yearning one.
We were patient, and patience is the course of the wise
وَمُستَبشِرٍand one rejoicing أَبدىshowed السُرورَdelight لِنَكبَةٍat a calamity

And to one who rejoiced, showing delight at a calamity
My lack of composure at misfortunes is not
that befell us—for calamities are of many kinds—
From frailty, but fate apportions to the doomed
فَقُلتُso I said اِنتَظِرwait for عُقبىthe outcome الزَمانِof time فَرُبَّماfor perhaps

سَقاكَit will make you drink ذُنوباًa bucketful إِنif كَفاكَsuffices you ذُنوبُa bucketful
I said, 'Await time's outcome; perhaps
Nor is my endurance feigned or hard-hearted
it will make you drink a bucketful, if a bucketful suffices you.'
But the way of the noble is ever erect
فَنَحنُso we بَكيناwept نَبتَغيseeking الأَجرَthe reward فيin البُكاweeping

وَنَحنُand we صَبَرناwere patient وَالصَبورُand the patient one لَبيبُis wise
We have wept, seeking reward in our weeping,
Happy are those who rely solely on themselves!
and we have been patient; the patient man is wise.
My Lord, I repent and return unto You
وَماand not جَزَعيmy anguish لِلحادِثاتِbefore calamities اِستِكانَةًsubmission

My anguish before calamities is not submission,
but a share owed to the departed.

Nor is my fortitude regarding them forgetfulness or hardness,
but the timber of the noblest is strong.

Blessed is he who is concerned only with himself,
and, O our Lord, to You I repent.
