Who will help with the dawn of gray hair—how it breathed

through my locks, and the night of sorrow answered it.

    لَكِن كَسَتهُ هُمومُ قَلبي حِندِسا

    Do not think the blackness of my hair a blessing;

rather, my heart's worries clothed it in pitch darkness.

Though my cheek-down has not grayed, nor bent

my back, my heart has indeed grayed and bowed.

I certainly avert my eye from my reproacher,

and see my smile become a frown within my heart.

My heart softens with affection for a friend,

but when one day it feels wronged, it hardens.

I turn my gaze among wishes, passionately drawn to them,

and hold my yearning above 'perhaps' and 'maybe.'

Why do I see halos turned into howdahs,

and become a gazelle's covert within these ribs?

They were folded about white statues of beauty; then hid

within them gazelles that graze upon souls.

They are brilliant stars, retreating in the midday heat,

and maidens hiding within the howdahs.

They visit desert waters by night, adopting Arab ways,

and approach the fires within the ribs like Magians.

    فَزَها النَسيمُ أَريجُها فَتَنَقَّسا

    Among them, one with a loose-hanging sash breathed;

her fragrance adorned the breeze, and it grew perfumed.

She visited as a phantom visits, concealed,

and reached out as a gazelle reaches, apprehensively.

She feared the watchers around her leather tent,

so she came trailing fine silk over the dust.

She tired of the grandees among men, and longed for

a vagabond of the tribe who retains nothing precious.

    أَرَأَيتَ إِملاقي لِمَجيدِيَ مُركِسا

    The maiden of the tribe claimed that I was destitute;

have you seen my poverty bring my noble standing low?

All night the whisperings of her jewelry stirred her,

    until the luminous dawn breathed.

She came early to blame you for generosity—a Kindite,

a Sadafite, tracing her descent to al-Sakun and Ashras.

O daughter of my uncle, have you heard of a noble man

[Wording unclear:] they weep; he was given blame for feeding or clothing.

Do not suppose our chief ate bitter plants

from hunger, but out of pride and haughtiness.

Have you forgotten generosity's reward? Generosity

surely brings untamed wishes back as companions.

The owner slaughtered his mount for the maidens,

and Unayzah's luscious mouth was made his to enjoy.

He did not forget a dead man at al-Kulab, and perhaps

he could scarcely bear to speak and make things obscure.

And you forgot Hujr, [the day] he roused with a stick

a lion; whoever rouses lions falls prey.

The shoulders of his kingship fell at the hands of Kahil,

forever; it dealt him a most ill-omened day.

Even if Malik or Kahil were annihilated,

they had indeed slain, in him, a fierce chieftain.

Kingship was among your Kunud, and generosity

in a gazelle; both stood alone and followed Qays's ways.

    وَأَظُنُّ أَنَّ لَها الثَرى وَالأَشمُسا

    Like the kings of an army whenever they trod the earth;

and I think the earth and the suns belong to her.

Her mountain, al-Sulami, her well-regarded judge,

has nobility and bounty that make the mute speak.

His companions and his enemies bore witness for him,

even the clouds, when they rained and gushed forth.

I swear, he is most lavish with bounty and its stores

among us; it traveled with the caravan and camped by night.

He clothed mankind in manifest justice, and before him

their governors' tyranny had stripped them of those garments.

He arranged the measures of affairs with his resolve,

and aimed it at misfortunes' target, hitting the bull's-eye.

To him came, for the lofty house whose pillar he is,

pillars bringing him glory and unbending might.

The sons of Thual said: You begrudged noble deeds

ascribed to their Hatim. I replied: What could they be?

Bring one deed of Hatim of Tayyi

like these, and I pledge not to begrudge it.

Or ask me about anyone among mankind other than Abu

Hafs—can you find an alternative to him?

Or shoulder some of what he shoulders,

and a colossal Yalamlam of it will drive you back.

People are alike, yet between them

in merit lies the distance between the forelock and the sciatic vein.

Did you think every man overflowed with generosity?

Not every house in al-Sham is the Holy House.

How ashamed the shining moon was when it saw

Umar clothed in every kind of majesty!

If it could, it would come seeking a spark of that majesty

from its horizon, and then would find a source of light.

A man who looks for disgrace in his bounty hopes in vain,

except the ungrateful one, who has indeed despaired.

I perfumed the mouths of the reciters with his praise,

as though a perfumer were anointing a bridegroom.

I surpassed the rank of speakers through thanking him,

yet if he persists in his bounty, he will surely silence me.

O peerless one of the Arabs, were they fashioned

as a purebred steed, you would be its crown!

I have called on you for radiant hopes amid

the darkness of this evil age, resembling Yunus.

If the whale of calamities swallows my quest,

spread over it the gourd-vine of your bounty as a cloak.

You are refreshment when a watering place is inaccessible,

and water when hope turns turbid and brings despair.

Failure lies in hoping for anyone but you; I only

fear the garden's growth that steals away.

    لِمَ لا أَصونَ عَن اِبتِذالي الأنفُسا

    For you are the most precious asset held in reserve;

why should I not spare the most precious from my wearing it out?
