- شرب الوصل دستج الهجر فاستطلقUnion drank a draught of estrangement, and so
- شربت بكأس الهوى نبذة معاTogether, I drank a little from passion’s cup.
- فأكثرت حسادي وأكثرت خلتيSo you made my enviers many, and my intimates many;
- فتقت بالهجر دروز الهوىShe unpicked love's seams through estrangement,

- نسب الجماز مقصورAl-Jammāz’s lineage is cut shor—
- وعهدي به والله يصلح أمرهAnd I recall him—may God set his affairs right—
- وعويص من الأمور بهيمAnd a knotty matter, among all matters pitch-dark,
- وكانوا لنا أصدقاء مضواThey were friends of ours, and they passed away.
- يا شبيه الفالوذ في حمرة الخدO you, like faludh pudding in the redness of your cheek,
- يا نورة الهجر حلقت الصفاO depilatory lime of estrangement, you have shaved away harmony,
- يطيب العيش أن تلقى حكيماLife is pleasant when you meet a wise man,
- يكون الخال في وجه مليحA beauty mark lies upon a lovely face,
