وَعَهديand my recollection بِهِof him وَاللَهِand God يُصلِحُmay set right أَمرَهُhis affairs

And I recall him—may God set his affairs right—
And I entrust him to Allah, who will make his matter right,
Broad in the scope of his judgment, open-hearted.
Open-minded, broad-chested, of sound opinion -
فَلاso may not جَعَلَmake اللَهُGod الوُلايَةَpublic office سِبَةa disgrace

So may God not make public office a disgrace
May Allah not make the rule a cause for blame upon him,
To him, for I have experience of public office.
For I have experience in rule, be sure.
فَقَدfor indeed جَهَدوهُthey wearied him بِالسُؤالِwith requests وَقَدand indeed أَبىrefused

For they have wearied him with requests, yet nothing would satisfy
They pressed him with questions but he refused
The nobility within him but to persist and grow more ardent.
Glory through it, unless he was constrained and consulted.
