أَتَرجوdo you hope أَنto تَكونَbe وَأَنتَwhile you are شَيخan old man
أَتَرجو أَن تَكونَ وَأَنتَ شَيخ
كَماas قَدindeed كُنتَyou were أَيّامُdays of الشَبابyouth
كَما قَد كُنتَ أَيّامُ الشَباب
Do you hope to be, now that you are an old man,
Do you hope when old to be as you were
as you once were in the days of youth?
In the days of your youth, it's a lie don't endure
لَقَدindeed كَذَّبتَكَhas deceived you نَفسَكَyour own self لَيسَis not ثَوبa garment
لَقَد كَذَّبتَكَ نَفسَكَ لَيسَ ثَوب
دَريسُthreadbare كَالجَديدِlike a new one مِنَamong الثِيابthe garments
دَريسُ كَالجَديدِ مِنَ الثِياب
Indeed, your own self has deceived you: no garment
Your soul has misled you, a dress is no cure
worn threadbare is like a new garment.
Worn clothes unlike new ones don't long endure
