I sowed my love for him in a triangular plot of land,
I planted his love in a triangular field
And watered it with the water of lasting fidelity to the pledge.
And watered it with eternal covenant
وَسَرجَنتُهُand I manured it بِالوَصلِwith union لَمdid not آلَstint in effort جاهِداstriving hard

And manured it with union, sparing no effort,
I fenced it with attachment, striving tirelessly
So that the manure might shield it from the blight of rejection.
So the fencer would protect it from harm
فَلَمّاso when تَعالىgrew tall النَبتُthe crop وَاِخضَرَّand grew green يانِعاflourishing
وَأَفرَكَand ripened حُبُّgrain (contextual reading; vocalized as 'love') الحُبِّlove فيin سُنبُلِears of grain الوُدِّaffection
Then, when the crop grew tall, green and flourishing,
When the plants grew lush and green
And love's grain ripened in the ears of affection,
And the love of love bore fruit in stalks of affection
أَتَتهُcame to it أَكَفُّhands الهَجرِestrangement فيهاin them مَناجِلsickles

The hands of estrangement came upon it, carrying sickles,
The palms of separation came to it, sickles in hand
And hastened to reap it as soon as it ripened.
And hastily reaped when ripe for harvest
فَياso O شُؤمُill fortune of ماليmy wealth إِذas يَعطُلlies idle لِلشَّقاthrough misfortune

So alas for my ill-fated wealth, lying idle through misfortune!
Oh what misfortune that my efforts were in vain
And alas for my bull: my liver has become its feeding trough!
Oh what agony that my liver is now its fodder
